PART 11 — SUBJECT ZERO
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Margaret stared toward the ceiling.
Silas whispered,
“Who is calling?”
She shook her head.
“You don't want to know.”
The phone stopped.
Then another phone began ringing.
This time, it was mine.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice said:
“You opened the file.”
“Who are you?”
“You're standing beside the answer.”
I looked at Silas.
“Explain.”
“Subject Zero isn't Silas.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
The voice laughed.
The call ended.
I turned toward the computer.
The file contained hundreds of pages.
The first page was dated 1987.
PROJECT ZERO
The purpose was described as a long-term experiment involving inheritance, identity and behavioral conditioning.
The project had one objective:
Create a person capable of inheriting the entire network without knowing it existed.
Silas stared at the screen.
“So I was raised for this?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You were protected from it.”
“Then why am I Subject Zero?”
“Because your identity was used.”
“What does that mean?”
She pointed to the photograph.
“That isn't you.”
Silas froze.
“What?”
“The boy in that photograph is not Silas.”
I looked closer.
The face was similar.
Very similar.
But not identical.
There was a small scar beneath the left eye.
Silas didn't have one.
I zoomed in.
The boy was perhaps six years old.
Silas's grandmother whispered:
“That was his older brother.”
Silas stared at her.
“I don't have a brother.”
“You did.”
His face went pale.
“What happened to him?”
Margaret looked down.
“He died.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
Silas's mother began crying.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because his death was the beginning of everything.”
Silas stared at the photograph.
“What was his name?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Ethan.”
I searched the database.
No birth record.
No death certificate.
Nothing.
Another erased person.
The computer suddenly opened a new file.
ETHAN MILLER — STATUS: UNKNOWN.
Silas stepped backward.
“You said he died.”
“I thought he did.”
Margaret looked terrified.
“Then who changed the file?”
Nobody answered.
A sound came from upstairs.
This time it wasn't a phone.
It was footsteps.
Several people.
We moved toward the stairs.
I contacted backup.
Then the lights came on.
A man stood at the top of the staircase.
Harold.
He was no longer in custody.
He was holding a gun.
“Put yours down.”
I aimed at him.
“You're under arrest.”
He smiled.
“Not anymore.”
Silas stared at him.
“Are you my father?”
Harold looked at him.
“Yes.”
Silas's face hardened.
“Why did you lie?”
“Because I needed you to hate the wrong man.”
His father stepped forward.
“You used my son.”
Harold laughed.
“Your son?”
He pointed at Silas.
“You raised him.”
“But I am his father.”
“No.”
Harold looked at him.
“You're not.”
Silas's mother screamed:
“Stop!”
Harold's expression changed.
“You still haven't told him?”
“Told me what?”
Harold looked at Silas.
“Your real father is dead.”
Silas stared.
“Then who are you?”
Harold smiled.
“I'm the man who made you.”
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?”
Harold pointed toward the computer.
“Read Subject Zero.”
I looked at the screen.
A final page appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO — ORIGINAL GENETIC SOURCE: HAROLD MILLER.
Silas stepped backward.
“No.”
Harold continued.
“But there was a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Your mother refused to let us continue.”
Silas's mother whispered:
“You promised he would be safe.”
“I lied.”
Harold raised his weapon.
I moved between him and Silas.
“Drop the gun.”
He smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
“The trust isn't meant for Silas.”
He pointed at me.
“It's meant for you.”
I froze.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Harold continued:
“Your family has been preparing you for this moment since you were born.”
I shook my head.
“That's impossible.”
He laughed.
“Look at the beneficiary list.”
I turned toward the screen.
The names appeared.
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY — EMILY CARTER.
SECONDARY BENEFICIARY — SILAS MILLER.
FINAL AUTHORITY — UNKNOWN.
Then a third name appeared.
Slowly.
Letters forming one after another.
ETHAN MILLER.
Silas stared at the screen.
“But Ethan is dead.”
Margaret whispered:
“We never found his body.”
The room became silent.
Then the computer made a sound.
INCOMING CONNECTION.
A video window opened.
A man's face appeared.
Older.
Scar beneath his left eye.
The same face from the photograph.
Silas stopped breathing.
The man looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Silas.”
Silas whispered:
“Ethan?”
The man smiled.
“Yes.”
Margaret began to cry.
Harold lowered his weapon.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Ethan leaned closer to the camera.
“You've spent your whole life believing you were the heir.”
He paused.
“You're not.”
Silas stared at him.
“Then who am I?”
Ethan smiled.
“The decoy.”
The screen went black.
At that exact moment, every light in the farmhouse turned red.
A warning appeared on the computer:
PROJECT ZERO — PHASE TWO ACTIVATED.
And underneath it:
PRIMARY SUBJECT LOCATED.
My name appeared.
EMILY CARTER.
I looked around the room.
For the first time, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe the entire case hadn't been about Silas.
Maybe Silas had only been the path.
Maybe every house, every ledger, every disappearance…
had been designed to lead us to me.
And somewhere outside the farmhouse, a car engine started.
Someone was waiting.
Someone who had known my name long before I ever knew theirs.
