PART 10 — THE MAN WHO WASN'T HIS FATHER

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Silas stared at the black screen.

Then he turned toward his mother.

“Is Harold my father?”

She covered her face.

His father stepped forward.

“Silas…”

“Don't.”

The word came out quietly.

But it carried more anger than a scream.

“Don't call me that.”

His father stopped.

Silas looked at me.

“Is it true?”

I didn't know what to say.

The birth certificate appeared authentic.

But documents could be forged.

Especially in a family that had spent decades creating false identities.

I contacted a forensic specialist.

Within an hour, we had confirmation that the certificate was genuine.

Silas was devastated.

His father sat alone in the corner.

Finally he spoke.

“I knew.”

Silas looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I discovered it years ago.”

“And you stayed?”

“Because I loved you.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Silas turned away.

His mother approached him.

“I'm sorry.”

He didn't look at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Harold threatened you.”

“And now?”

“Now he's coming for you.”

The trust would open in seventy-two hours.

We moved Silas to a secure location.

But that night, I received a message.

A video.

Harold appeared on screen.

He was sitting in a dark room.

“You've been looking for the wrong villain.”

I watched silently.

“Evelyn isn't your enemy.”

He smiled.

“She only wants to survive.”

“Then who are you?”

His smile disappeared.

“I'm the person who should have inherited everything.”

The video showed old documents.

Thomas had originally promised Harold control of the family assets.

But later changed the agreement.

Why?

Because Harold had tried to kill him.

The video ended.

Then another began.

This time, it showed Evelyn.

She was sitting in a hospital bed.

She looked much older.

She spoke directly to the camera.

“If Silas is watching this, I'm sorry.”

She explained that she had hidden the trust because she discovered that Harold intended to use the money to build an international criminal network.

She had tried to stop him.

But she failed.

She had disappeared to protect Silas.

Then came the revelation.

“The trust isn't only financial.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“It contains the evidence that can bring down everyone.”

I paused the video.

Silas looked at me.

“Everyone?”

“Apparently.”

He stared at the floor.

“What happens if I open it?”

“We don't know.”

His mother answered:

“You could expose hundreds of people.”

“And if I don't?”

“Harold gets another chance.”

Silas looked at me.

“What would you do?”

I thought about it.

“I would open it.”

His father shook his head.

“That could get him killed.”

“Keeping it closed could also get him killed.”

Silas looked at both of us.

“I'll do it.”

At midnight, we returned to the farmhouse.

The brass key fit a hidden lock beneath the floor.

A metal compartment opened.

Inside was a small black device.

No screen.

No buttons.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Silas placed his hand on it.

Nothing happened.

Then a voice spoke.

“Identity confirmed.”

Everyone froze.

The device displayed:

SILAS MILLER — BENEFICIARY

Then:

SECONDARY BENEFICIARY — EMILY CARTER

I stared at the screen.

“Me?”

His father looked shocked.

“Why are you listed?”

“I don't know.”

The device continued.

FINAL ACTIVATION REQUIRES TWO BENEFICIARIES.

Silas looked at me.

“So we need to open it together.”

I placed my hand beside his.

The device unlocked.

A hidden drawer opened.

Inside was a USB drive.

And one handwritten note.

Silas picked it up.

The note contained only six words:

“Do not trust the person beside you.”

We looked at each other.

Then the lights went out.

Someone was moving upstairs.

I drew my weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Deliberate.

The basement door opened.

A silhouette appeared.

I raised my weapon.

“Police! Don't move!”

The person stepped into the light.

It was Margaret.

Silas's grandmother.

She looked at us.

Then at the USB drive.

“You opened it.”

Silas stared at her.

“Grandma?”

She smiled sadly.

“I warned your grandfather this day would come.”

I lowered my weapon slightly.

“What are you doing here?”

Margaret looked at me.

“I came to stop you.”

“Why?”

“Because the moment you open that drive…”

She paused.

“…the entire family will know what I did.”

Silas stepped forward.

“What did you do?”

Margaret looked at him.

“I was the one who created the first trust.”

Silas froze.

“But Evelyn…”

“She only finished what I started.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Because your grandfather wasn't protecting this family.”

She looked at Silas.

“He was protecting someone else.”

“Who?”

She pointed toward the USB drive.

“Open it.”

Silas hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because then you'll finally know who your real enemy is.”

He inserted the drive into the computer.

One folder appeared.

ORIGINAL FAMILY RECORDS.

Inside were hundreds of files.

But one file stood alone.

SUBJECT ZERO.

Silas clicked it.

A photograph appeared.

The photograph showed a young boy.

Silas.

Beside him stood Harold.

And behind them…

Evelyn.

But the date on the photograph was impossible.

It was taken two years before Silas was born.

Silas whispered:

“How?”

Margaret stared at the screen.

“That is the question.”

Then the computer suddenly displayed a new message.

SUBJECT ZERO HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.

And somewhere upstairs…

a phone began to ring.
