PART 4 — THE TRUTH ABOUT MADISON'S FATHER
The room went completely silent.
I stared at the photograph.
My father.
Rachel.
Daniel.
And the unknown man.
Four people standing together years before Madison was born.
On the back, those words kept repeating in my mind:
THE GIRL MUST NEVER KNOW WHO HER REAL FATHER IS.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me the truth.”
He didn't answer.
“Daniel!”
He closed his eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
His voice broke.
“Before Madison was born.”
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?”
The stranger stepped closer.
“Your husband didn't raise another man's daughter by accident.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Enough.”
The stranger smiled.
“You've protected the secret for fifteen years.”
I stared at my husband.
“Is he telling the truth?”
Daniel finally looked at me.
“Yes.”
My entire world seemed to collapse.
“Who is her father?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Your father.”
I couldn't breathe.
“What?”
“Your father was involved with another woman before he died.”
“That makes no sense.”
“He wasn't her biological father.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Madison's biological father is the man standing in this room.”
I turned toward the stranger.
He looked at Madison.
His eyes filled with emotion.
“I never stopped looking for my daughter.”
Madison stared at him.
“Dad?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
I felt dizzy.
“No…”
The stranger introduced himself.
“Michael Hayes.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Michael, leave.”
Michael ignored him.
“I was your father's business partner.”
He looked at me.
“Your father discovered that I had uncovered financial crimes inside his company.”
“And Madison?”
Michael's voice softened.
“Your father knew my child was going to be born.”
My hands trembled.
“He arranged for my death.”
Daniel suddenly shouted:
“That's enough!”
Michael looked at him.
“You helped him.”
Daniel went silent.
I stared at my husband.
“Is that true?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me break.
“You knew?”
“I knew who Madison's father was.”
“And you stayed silent for fifteen years?”
“I loved her.”
“That doesn't give you the right to lie to me!”
“I know.”
Michael reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
Inside were hospital records.
Birth documents.
DNA results.
Photographs.
Everything.
He placed them on the table.
“I didn't come here to take Madison away.”
I looked at him.
“Then why are you here?”
“To save her.”
Michael pointed toward the medical report.
“Your daughter carries a genetic marker your father spent years trying to control.”
My stomach tightened.
“The marker is connected to a treatment he developed illegally.”
“What treatment?”
“A treatment that can suppress certain neurological diseases.”
The doctor looked shocked.
Michael continued.
“Your father tested it on people without their consent.”
“And Madison?”
“He discovered she inherited the exact genetic combination he needed.”
I looked at my daughter.
“So someone has been poisoning her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To activate the marker.”
I felt sick.
“They've been using my daughter as an experiment.”
Michael nodded.
“But the treatment is failing.”
The doctor suddenly looked at Madison's chart.
“That's why the mass appeared.”
I stared at him.
“Can you save her?”
He hesitated.
“We need to know exactly what substance she was exposed to.”
Michael opened another folder.
“I have the answer.”
He pulled out a small vial.
“This is what they gave her.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“I thought that was destroyed.”
I turned toward him.
“You knew about this?”
He looked devastated.
“I tried to stop them.”
“Who is ‘they’?”
Daniel looked at Michael.
Then at me.
“Your sister.”
My heart stopped.
“Rachel?”
“She wasn't working for them voluntarily.”
Michael shook his head.
“They threatened her.”
“With what?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Your father has been alive this entire time.”
I stared at him.
“Where?”
Before he could answer, every light in the hospital hallway went dark.
The doctor shouted:
“Security!”
A door slammed somewhere nearby.
Then another.
Madison grabbed my hand.
“Mom…”
“I'm here.”
Her breathing became rapid.
“He's coming.”
“Who?”
She pointed toward the hallway.
“The man from my dreams.”
My blood ran cold.
“What man?”
Madison whispered:
“He always tells me the same thing.”
“What?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He says…”
She paused.
“‘Your mother doesn't know who she married.’”
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely white.
Then someone began walking toward our room.
Slow footsteps.
One.
Two.
Three.
The stranger stopped outside the door.
Michael moved in front of Madison.
Daniel stood beside him.
I held my daughter tightly.
The door opened.
An elderly man entered.
His hair was gray.
His face was thinner.
But I recognized him immediately.
My father.
The man who had supposedly died eight years ago.
He smiled at me.
“Hello, Sarah.”
I couldn't speak.
He looked at Madison.
Then at Daniel.
“You've all made this much more difficult than it needed to be.”
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“You're not touching her.”
My father smiled.
“Oh, Sarah.”
He looked almost amused.
“You still don't understand.”
He pointed toward Madison.
“She was never my experiment.”
I frowned.
“Then what is she?”
His smile disappeared.
“She is the reason I faked my death.”
He stepped closer.
“And if you want your daughter to survive…”
He paused.
“…you'll have to tell her who her mother really is.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
My father looked directly into my eyes.
“Because your daughter inherited the marker from you.”
The room fell silent.
Then he whispered:
“And your mother was never the woman you thought she was.”
