PART 7 — My Missing Uncle Returned With the Truth My Family Buried
For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound in the old house was the rain hitting the windows.
My hand was still holding the phone.
But my mind was somewhere else.
Because the impossible had just happened.
My uncle…
The man my family had mourned for fifteen years…
Was alive.
* * *
My mother was the first person to react.
She grabbed the back of a chair to steady herself.
“Thomas…”
Her voice cracked.
“How?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Or maybe…
Someone knew more than they were admitting.
* * *
I looked at her.
“You really thought he was gone?”
My mother looked down.
“We thought he left.”
“You thought?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Claire, your uncle disappeared after an argument with your grandfather.”
I frowned.
“My grandfather?”
She nodded.
“Thomas believed something was wrong with the family finances. He accused people of hiding something.”
* * *
My heart started racing.
“Who did he accuse?”
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
* * *
Everything became silent.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another piece of the puzzle that had been hidden from me.
My entire life had been surrounded by people who knew the truth but decided I was better off not knowing.
* * *
Adrian stepped closer.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
“I know what you’re thinking.”
“Do you?”
My voice sounded colder than I intended.
“Because everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.”
I looked around the room.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.”
* * *
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
* * *
Mason closed the journal carefully.
“We need to leave.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas said Victor knows we found this.”
He walked toward the window.
“And if Victor has someone watching this house…”
He stopped.
“We are no longer looking for him.”
A pause.
“He is looking for us.”
* * *
A cold feeling moved through my body.
The old house suddenly didn’t feel safe anymore.
Not because of ghosts.
Not because of memories.
Because someone outside knew exactly where we were.
* * *
Adrian grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling security.”
Before he could press the number, a loud sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
* * *
Mason immediately turned off the lights.
“Everyone stay quiet.”
My heart was pounding.
I had survived my father attacking me in front of hundreds of people.
I had survived discovering years of betrayal.
But standing in that dark house…
Waiting to see who was outside…
Felt different.
* * *
A shadow moved past the window.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone was walking around the house.
* * *
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Claire…”
I looked at her.
She was terrified.
Not pretending.
Not performing.
Actually afraid.
“Who is it?”
She whispered:
“I don’t know.”
* * *
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at me.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood went cold.
It was a photo.
A photo of us standing inside the house.
Taken only seconds earlier.
* * *
Under the image were six words:
“Stop searching, or lose everything.”
* * *
Adrian immediately took my phone.
His expression changed.
The calm businessman disappeared.
The protective husband returned.
“He is here.”
* * *
Mason looked at the message carefully.
“He wants us to panic.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“He wants Claire to give up.”
* * *
But something inside me changed at that moment.
Because a few days earlier, I would have been afraid.
I would have questioned myself.
I would have wondered if fighting back was worth it.
But not anymore.
* * *
I looked at the photo again.
Someone was trying to scare me.
Someone wanted me to run.
Someone wanted me to become the weak daughter who always forgave.
But they made one mistake.
They hurt me on the one day I finally stopped being afraid.
* * *
“Send him a message.”
Everyone looked at me.
Adrian frowned.
“Claire…”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“If he wants a reaction, he’s going to get one.”
* * *
I typed slowly.
My hands didn’t shake.
“You spent years hiding in the shadows.”
I paused.
Then continued.
“Now I’m coming for the truth.”
* * *
Mason looked surprised.
“You’re provoking him.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I looked toward the window.
“Because people like Victor only feel powerful when others are afraid.”
* * *
A few seconds later…
The phone vibrated again.
A reply.
Only three words.
“Ask your father.”
* * *
I stared at the screen.
My father.
Why would Victor tell me to ask my father?
What did Ronald Mercer know that he had never told me?
* * *
Then another message appeared.
This time, it was not from Victor.
It was from Thomas.
My missing uncle.
* * *
“Claire, don’t trust your father’s confession.”
* * *
My heart stopped.
A second message arrived.
“He will tell you a version of the story where he looks like the victim.”
* * *
Then the final message came.
The one that changed everything.
“Because Ronald Mercer didn’t steal your grandmother’s money for himself.”
* * *
I looked at Adrian.
At Mason.
At my mother.
Nobody understood.
Then Thomas sent one final sentence.
“Your father was paying someone to protect you.”
* * *
The room went silent.
My father.
The man who betrayed me.
The man who destroyed my wedding.
The man who stole from my inheritance…
Had been paying someone.
To protect me?
* * *
But from who?
And why would the man who hurt me be protecting me from someone even more dangerous?
For the first time…
I realized something terrifying.
Maybe my father wasn’t the biggest villain in this story.
Maybe he was just another piece on someone else’s board.
TO BE CONTINUED…
