PART 3 — The Person Behind My Father’s Secret Was Someone I Never Suspected
The police car disappeared into the darkness outside the wedding venue.
But nobody inside the ballroom moved.
Nobody knew what to say.
The room that had been filled with music, laughter, and celebration was now filled with silence.
My wedding dress was still covered in wrinkles from the moment I hit the floor.
The flowers were still on the tables.
The cake was still untouched.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Except my life had completely changed.
* * *
Adrian stayed beside me the entire time.
He refused to leave.
Even when the paramedics told him I needed rest.
Even when Mason told him there were still legal matters to handle.
He simply looked at them and said:
“She is my priority.”
Those four words meant more to me than anything else that night.
Because for years, I had been protecting my family.
But when I finally needed protection…
My family was the reason I needed it.
* * *
After the police finished taking my statement, Mason returned with another folder.
This time, his expression was different.
More serious.
I immediately knew something had changed.
“What is it?” Adrian asked.
Mason looked at both of us.
“There is something you need to see.”
He placed the folder on the table.
“I found another pattern in the financial records.”
* * *
My heart tightened.
“Another pattern?”
Mason nodded.
“Yes.”
He opened the folder.
“The missing money from your grandmother’s trust wasn’t only transferred through your father’s accounts.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
He hesitated.
“It means someone helped him.”
* * *
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because somehow…
I already knew.
My father was greedy.
He was selfish.
But he wasn’t careful.
He was too arrogant.
Someone else had been helping him hide the truth.
Someone who knew how to cover his tracks.
* * *
Mason pulled out several documents.
“These transactions were approved using additional authorization.”
I looked at the signatures.
At first, they looked unfamiliar.
Then I saw the initials.
And my entire body went cold.
“No…”
Adrian immediately noticed my reaction.
“Who is it?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because the name on the document was impossible.
It belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had hugged me earlier that evening.
Someone who had smiled while watching me walk down the aisle.
* * *
My mother.
* * *
I stared at the signature.
My hands started shaking.
“That can’t be real.”
Mason remained silent.
Because he knew the truth was painful.
Not every betrayal came from someone who hated you.
Sometimes it came from someone who claimed to love you.
* * *
“She knew?” I whispered.
Mason looked down.
“We believe she knew more than she admitted.”
My chest felt heavy.
All those years…
Every time my father demanded money.
Every time he pressured me.
Every time my mother told me:
“Don’t make things difficult.”
“Just let him have what he wants.”
“Family helps family.”
* * *
I thought she was protecting my father.
But maybe…
She was protecting herself.
* * *
Adrian placed his hand over mine.
“Don’t blame yourself.”
I looked at him.
“How did I not see it?”
His eyes softened.
“Because you wanted them to be better than they were.”
Those words broke something inside me.
Because he was right.
I wasn’t blind because I was weak.
I was blind because I loved them.
* * *
Mason continued.
“There’s more.”
I looked at him.
“What else?”
He took out a final document.
“This transfer happened three months before your wedding.”
I looked at the amount.
My breathing stopped.
It was almost double what I expected.
“Where did the money go?”
Mason looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“That’s the problem.”
A pause.
“We don’t know.”
* * *
The room became silent again.
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
Mason leaned forward.
“The money disappeared through several offshore accounts.”
My stomach turned.
“Offshore?”
“Yes.”
“And the final account holder?”
Mason looked uncomfortable.
“We are still investigating.”
* * *
I stood there frozen.
Because this was no longer about my father stealing from a trust.
This was bigger.
Much bigger.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had spent years moving money carefully.
Someone had been hiding behind my family name.
* * *
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something inside me told me to answer.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a man’s voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
“Is this Claire Mercer?”
My body went still.
“Yes.”
The man took a breath.
“My name is Daniel Brooks.”
I frowned.
“I don’t know anyone named Daniel.”
“I know.”
His voice became lower.
“But I knew your grandmother.”
* * *
My heart started racing.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“She asked me to contact you if anything happened to her trust.”
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Mason.
“What are you talking about?”
The man continued.
“Your grandmother suspected someone close to her was stealing from you.”
* * *
I couldn’t move.
Because my grandmother had known.
She had known something was wrong.
And she had prepared for it.
“Why didn’t you contact me earlier?”
There was a long silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“Because your grandmother left one condition.”
“What condition?”
His voice dropped.
“She said I should only reveal the truth when you were ready to stop protecting the people who hurt you.”
* * *
My eyes filled with tears.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
My grandmother wasn’t just leaving me money.
She was leaving me a warning.
* * *
Before I could ask another question, Daniel said:
“There is one more thing you need to know.”
“What?”
“Your father wasn’t the person who started this.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then who was?”
A pause.
Then his answer came.
“The person who benefited the most…”
“Was Adrian’s business partner.”
* * *
I looked at my husband.
Confused.
Shocked.
Afraid.
Because the one person I believed had saved me…
Was suddenly connected to the biggest secret of all.
TO BE CONTINUED…
