PART 5 — THE SECRET NOAH HAD HIDDEN FROM ME
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at my father.
Then at Noah.
Then back at my father.
“What do you mean,” I whispered, “he isn't the man I think he is?”
Robert Carter looked older than I remembered.
Not weak.
Not defeated.
Just tired.
As if he had carried the weight of a terrible secret for years.
Noah remained completely still.
“Robert,” he said quietly.
My father shook his head.
“She deserves to know.”
Noah's jaw tightened.
“She deserves to know everything.”
My heart pounded.
“Then tell me.”
My father looked at me.
“Ten years ago, I didn't disappear.”
“I know.”
“I went into hiding.”
“Because of Grant's father?”
“Yes.”
“And Noah?”
My father hesitated.
“That is more complicated.”
I looked at Noah.
“Did you know my father was alive?”
Noah didn't answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“How long?”
“Eight years.”
I stared at him.
“Eight years?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I couldn't.”
“You couldn't?”
“Your father believed revealing himself would put you in greater danger.”
I shook my head.
“You don't get to decide what I deserve to know.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you?”
“Because I promised him.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps making promises to each other while lying to me.”
Noah looked down.
That hurt more than an argument would have.
* * *
My father stepped closer.
“Emma, listen to me.”
I turned toward him.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
“Because people were watching you.”
“Who?”
“Grant's father.”
I froze.
“He knew where you lived?”
“He knew everything.”
“Then why did he let me marry Grant?”
My father looked at the floor.
“He didn't.”
“What?”
“Grant married you without his father's permission.”
I stared at him.
“But you said Grant was part of the plan.”
“He was.”
My heart sank.
“So was I.”
“Yes.”
“What plan?”
My father took a breath.
“Your marriage was supposed to give us access to the financial network.”
I felt sick.
“You used me.”
“No.”
“You just said—”
“I wanted to protect you.”
“You used my marriage to protect me?”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
My father looked at Noah.
“Noah was supposed to stop the transfer.”
“The seventy million?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because that money wasn't yours.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“It was blood money.”
Silence.
My father continued.
“Your grandfather had built a criminal empire through shipping companies. When he died, the assets were placed under your name.”
I swallowed.
“So I inherited a criminal empire?”
“No.”
My father shook his head.
“You inherited the evidence.”
* * *
Noah stepped forward.
“Your father spent years collecting proof.”
“Against whom?”
“Everyone involved.”
“Your family?”
“Mine. Grant's. Government officials. Bankers.”
I looked at him.
“Then why protect me?”
“Because you were the only person they couldn't legally eliminate without exposing the entire network.”
I stared at him.
“So I was valuable.”
Noah shook his head.
“You were innocent.”
“That doesn't sound like the same thing.”
“It isn't.”
My father reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small metal key.
“This is what they want.”
I looked at it.
“What does it open?”
“The vault.”
“Where?”
“Seattle.”
My heart raced.
“What is inside?”
“The original records.”
Noah's eyes narrowed.
“And the names.”
My father nodded.
“Everyone.”
* * *
Suddenly, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Noah turned immediately.
“Stay here.”
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I've spent my entire life being protected by people who refuse to tell me anything.”
“Emma—”
“I want the truth.”
My father looked at Noah.
“Let her come.”
Noah hesitated.
Then nodded.
We moved downstairs.
Grant stood near the front door.
He looked terrified.
“They're here.”
“Who?”
“My father's men.”
“How many?”
“Too many.”
Noah immediately pulled out his phone.
“Get everyone here.”
Grant looked at him.
“You can't fight them all.”
Noah stared at him.
“I don't need to.”
Then the front windows shattered.
Gunfire erupted.
I screamed.
Noah pulled me behind the wall.
My father grabbed Grant.
“Stay down!”
The house filled with noise.
Glass.
Footsteps.
Shouting.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
Noah looked toward the hallway.
“Move.”
We ran toward the basement.
A hidden door opened behind an old bookshelf.
My father entered first.
Noah followed.
I was last.
The door slammed behind us.
We descended a narrow staircase.
At the bottom was a massive steel door.
My father took the key from his pocket.
He handed it to me.
“Open it.”
My hands trembled.
“Why me?”
“Because it belongs to you.”
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The steel door slowly opened.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank records.
And one enormous screen.
It turned on automatically.
A video began playing.
My father appeared on the screen.
But he looked younger.
Maybe ten years younger.
I stared at him.
The recording began.
“Emma, if you're watching this, then I'm either dead…”
He paused.
“…or you finally found me.”
My father standing beside me closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“There is something I never told you.”
I held my breath.
“You were never the target.”
My heart stopped.
“You were the key.”
I looked at Noah.
He didn't move.
The recording continued.
“The people hunting you don't want your money.”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A hospital.
Then a newborn baby.
Me.
My father spoke again.
“They want the child.”
I felt cold.
“What child?”
My father on the recording looked directly into the camera.
“Your daughter.”
My blood ran cold.
“No.”
Noah immediately reached for me.
I stepped backward.
“My daughter?”
The recording continued.
“She carries the same genetic marker that can unlock the final account.”
I stared at the screen.
“But she was just born.”
“That's why they waited.”
I felt tears fill my eyes.
“Waited for what?”
The video changed.
A document appeared.
At the top was my name.
EMMA CARTER.
Below it was another name.
CHILD: FEMALE.
And beside it:
PROJECT HEIR — ACTIVE.
I covered my mouth.
Noah's face became stone.
My father whispered:
“They knew you would have a daughter.”
I turned toward him.
“How?”
He looked devastated.
“Because the pregnancy was monitored from the beginning.”
My stomach dropped.
“By who?”
No one answered.
Then Grant spoke from behind us.
“By my father.”
I spun around.
“How did you get down here?”
Grant was bleeding from his forehead.
“I followed you.”
Noah raised his weapon.
“Stay where you are.”
Grant raised both hands.
“I'm not here to fight.”
He looked at me.
“I'm here because I finally understand what my father wanted.”
“What?”
Grant's voice broke.
“He didn't want your money.”
He looked at my daughter through the small window of the medical transport team outside the secure entrance.
“He wanted her.”
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
Then Grant said something that made everyone freeze.
“And he already has someone inside this hospital.”
My heart stopped.
“My daughter is at the hospital.”
Grant nodded.
“Yes.”
Noah immediately grabbed his phone.
But before he could make the call, it rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
I stared at him.
“What happened?”
Noah looked directly at me.
“The neonatal unit has been evacuated.”
My blood turned to ice.
“Where is my daughter?”
He didn't answer.
Then his phone received a message.
A single photograph appeared.
My baby.
Sleeping peacefully in someone's arms.
And underneath it were six words:
COME ALONE, EMMA, OR SHE DIES.
I looked at Noah.
He looked at my father.
Then at Grant.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in Noah Whitaker's eyes.
