PART 4 — MY FATHER WAS STILL ALIVE
“He’s been waiting for you.”
Grant’s words echoed through the hospital room.
I stared at him.
“My father is alive?”
He nodded.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
My heart sank.
“You just said he’s waiting for me.”
“He is.”
“Then where is he?”
Grant looked at Noah.
“He’ll only reveal himself to him.”
Noah’s eyes narrowed.
“To me?”
Grant nodded.
“He doesn't trust anyone else.”
“Why?”
“Because ten years ago, your father discovered who was behind the money.”
I looked at Grant.
“What money?”
“The Whitaker port accounts.”
Noah went completely still.
Grant continued.
“Your father discovered that someone was using legitimate shipping companies to move billions through Seattle.”
Noah’s expression hardened.
“And my family?”
“Your family was blamed.”
“By whom?”
Grant swallowed.
“My father.”
Silence filled the room.
I stared at him.
“Your father framed Noah’s family?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted control of the entire operation.”
Noah stepped closer.
“And your father recruited you.”
Grant looked down.
“I was twenty-four.”
“You were old enough to understand.”
“I didn't know everything.”
“You knew enough to marry Emma.”
Grant's face tightened.
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
I looked at him.
“What wasn't?”
“Falling in love with you.”
My chest tightened.
For one brief second, the room became silent.
Then I remembered Vanessa.
The rain.
The Maserati.
The way he had looked at me when I was on the ground.
“Don't.”
“Emma—”
“You don't get to say that now.”
He nodded slowly.
“I know.”
* * *
The hospital lights suddenly flickered.
Noah looked toward the hallway.
“Turn them off.”
One of his men immediately killed the lights.
The room became dark.
My daughter began to cry.
I held her against my chest.
“What is happening?”
Noah whispered:
“They're here.”
I froze.
“Who?”
“The men Grant warned us about.”
A shadow moved beneath the door.
Then another.
Noah signaled his security team.
I heard footsteps.
A man's voice echoed through the corridor.
“Emma Carter.”
My blood ran cold.
“Come out.”
Noah whispered:
“Don't answer.”
The man continued.
“We don't want the baby hurt.”
I closed my eyes.
My daughter was trembling against me.
Noah moved beside my bed.
“Stay behind me.”
Grant whispered:
“I know that voice.”
“Who is it?”
“My father's security chief.”
Noah looked at him.
“Name.”
“Marcus Hale.”
Noah's expression changed.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
Noah looked at his men.
“Get Emma out through the service corridor.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Emma.”
“No.”
I looked at Grant.
“He knows where my father is.”
Grant nodded.
“We need him alive.”
Noah understood immediately.
“You're right.”
He turned toward his men.
“Take him.”
Grant frowned.
“What?”
“You're going to talk to Marcus.”
* * *
The door opened.
Noah stepped into the hallway first.
Two men followed.
A gunshot rang out.
Then another.
People screamed.
The hospital became chaos.
Noah's men moved quickly.
Within seconds, Marcus Hale was pinned against the wall.
Noah walked toward him.
“Where is Robert Carter?”
Marcus smiled.
“Still asking the wrong question.”
Noah grabbed his collar.
“Where?”
Marcus looked toward me.
“He's closer than you think.”
I stepped forward.
“Tell me.”
Marcus smiled.
“He told me never to give you his location.”
“Why?”
“Because if you found him…”
He paused.
“…they would find you.”
I felt my heart pound.
“Who?”
“The man behind your father's disappearance.”
Noah's voice became colder.
“Name.”
Marcus shook his head.
“You already know him.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
Marcus looked at Grant.
“Your husband.”
I turned toward Grant.
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“Not Grant.”
He leaned closer.
“His father.”
Grant went pale.
“My father is dead.”
Marcus smiled.
“That's what everyone was supposed to believe.”
* * *
I looked at Grant.
“Your father is alive?”
He nodded slowly.
“I thought he died five years ago.”
Marcus laughed.
“He faked his death.”
Noah stepped forward.
“Where is he?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Noah grabbed him again.
“Where?”
Marcus looked at me.
“He's waiting for you.”
“Why me?”
“Because your father hid something.”
“What?”
“The key.”
“What key?”
“The key to the entire network.”
Noah's eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Marcus smiled.
“Inside your father's house.”
I stared at him.
“My father hasn't lived there in ten years.”
“Exactly.”
* * *
Twenty minutes later, we left the hospital.
My daughter was secured in a medical transport vehicle.
Noah drove.
I sat beside him.
Grant followed in another car.
Rain continued to fall.
I looked at the sleeping baby beside me.
“What kind of life have I brought her into?”
Noah glanced at me.
“A life where she'll be protected.”
“By you?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
“You've said that before.”
“I know.”
“What exactly did he ask you to do?”
Noah remained silent.
Then he said:
“Protect his daughter.”
I stared at him.
“He knew Grant would betray me?”
“He suspected it.”
“And he knew you?”
“He saved my life.”
“When?”
“Ten years ago.”
I frowned.
“During the port attack?”
Noah nodded.
“My family was ambushed.”
“Your father was there?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He got me out.”
I looked at him differently.
“Then why did he disappear?”
Noah's jaw tightened.
“Because he stayed behind.”
I whispered:
“And you thought he died.”
“Yes.”
“But he didn't.”
“No.”
* * *
We arrived at my father's old house.
The place looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Overgrown garden.
A rusted gate.
I stepped out.
The front door was unlocked.
Noah followed closely.
Grant stayed outside.
“Why isn't he coming in?”
Noah looked at him.
“Because if this is a trap, he's the bait.”
We entered.
Dust covered everything.
Old furniture remained exactly where I remembered it.
I had only been here twice as a child.
But something about the house felt familiar.
I walked toward the study.
My father's desk was still there.
I touched the surface.
Then noticed a small scratch.
Three letters.
E.C.
My initials.
I pressed the wood.
A hidden drawer opened.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
My mother.
And a baby.
Me.
On the back was a handwritten message.
Emma, if you're reading this, I failed to protect you.
My hands trembled.
I turned the photograph over.
There was more.
Do not trust Grant.
I swallowed.
Then I saw the final line.
Do not trust Noah either.
I froze.
My heart began pounding.
Noah noticed my expression.
“What is it?”
I handed him the photograph.
He read it.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was inside the desk.”
He stared at the message.
“I can explain.”
My heart sank.
“What does my father mean?”
Noah looked at me.
Before he could answer, a voice came from behind us.
“Because your father knew exactly what I was capable of.”
I turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
Grant's face appeared behind him.
He stopped breathing.
“Dad…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, son.”
I stared at him.
This was the man who had supposedly died five years ago.
Grant's father.
But he wasn't looking at Grant.
He was looking directly at me.
Then he said:
“Emma, your father left you one final message.”
My throat tightened.
“What?”
He smiled.
“He told me that when you finally discovered the truth…”
He stepped forward.
“…you would come looking for him.”
I whispered:
“Where is my father?”
The man's smile disappeared.
“He's standing right behind you.”
I turned.
Noah had gone completely still.
A second figure stepped out of the darkness.
My breath caught.
A man with tired eyes.
A scar across his cheek.
The same face I remembered from childhood photographs.
My father.
Robert Carter.
Alive.
He looked at me.
Tears filled his eyes.
“Emma.”
I couldn't move.
“Dad?”
He nodded.
Then he looked at Noah.
And his expression changed.
“I'm sorry.”
Noah's jaw tightened.
“For what?”
Robert answered quietly:
“For making you believe I was the enemy.”
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Robert stared at Noah.
Then said:
“Because Noah Whitaker isn't the man you think he is.”
The room fell silent.
