PART 3
The words echoed in my mind.
They were preparing to profit from your death.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Maisie slept peacefully in her stroller, clutching the stuffed bear I had brought home from Idaho. Looking at her innocent face made the realization even more horrifying.
Peter hadn't simply wanted a divorce.
He hadn't simply wanted the house.
He had been building an entirely different future...
One in which I no longer existed.
Director Beck slid another folder across the conference table.
"We discovered this less than an hour ago."
Inside were copies of emails exchanged between Peter and Paige over the previous three months.
One subject line caught my attention immediately.
"Survivor Benefits Timeline."
My heartbeat accelerated.
The first email was from Paige.
"Once Rachel is officially listed as having abandoned the family, we wait thirty days before filing the next documents. By then, nobody will question the financial transfers."
The second was even worse.
"If her deployment becomes dangerous again, everything becomes easier."
I looked up.
"What does that mean?"
The lead federal investigator answered quietly.
"It means someone was watching your deployment."
Another document appeared on the screen.
A spreadsheet.
Dates.
Locations.
Wildfire assignments.
Travel schedules.
Someone had tracked every movement I made while commanding emergency operations in Idaho.
I recognized information that had never been posted publicly.
My stomach tightened.
"How could they know this?"
Director Beck's expression darkened.
"That's exactly what we're trying to find out."
* * *
At the notary office, Peter was no longer smiling.
Federal agents had seized every folder before anyone could sign a single page.
Helen finally broke the silence.
"This is a misunderstanding."
"We were only helping family."
One investigator turned toward her.
"Did you sign this witness statement?"
He held up a notarized affidavit.
Helen nodded cautiously.
"Yes."
"Did you personally witness Commander Lawson abandon her family?"
"No..."
"But Peter told us—"
"So your sworn statement was based on what someone else told you?"
Helen's face drained of color.
"I..."
"You understand filing a false sworn affidavit is a criminal offense?"
She slowly sat down.
Across the room, Peter glared at Paige.
"You said everything was legal."
Paige whispered back through clenched teeth.
"You told me the DNA report was real."
The agents exchanged knowing glances.
The conspiracy was already beginning to collapse.

By noon, search warrants had been executed at our house.
I accompanied investigators while another team cataloged evidence.
Walking through the front door felt surreal.
Only three days earlier, I had been thrown out of this same house with my daughter.
Now every room was filled with investigators wearing evidence gloves.
One agent called out from Peter's home office.
"You'll want to see this."
Inside a locked filing cabinet were dozens of folders.
Each labeled by date.
Each documenting my life.
Performance evaluations.
Military records.
Insurance policies.
Medical information.
Copies of my passport.
Photographs.
Even handwritten notes describing my daily routines before deployment.
It felt less like a family file...
and more like surveillance.
The lead investigator frowned.
"This goes back nearly two years."
Two years.
Long before Maisie had even been born.
Long before the fake DNA report.
This hadn't been a sudden betrayal.
It had been planned.

Then another discovery changed everything.
An evidence technician carefully removed a small black device hidden beneath Peter's desk.
"What is that?"
She looked toward the forensic specialist.
He examined it for only a few seconds.
"It's a secure external storage unit."
Minutes later, technicians accessed the encrypted drive.
The room became silent.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Some contained financial records.
Others held forged documents.
Then one folder appeared on the screen.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Director Beck immediately leaned forward.
"Open it."
Inside were detailed plans spanning almost eighteen months.
There were timelines.
Financial projections.
Legal strategies.
Checklists.
Every phase had a name.
Phase One: Gain financial control.
Phase Two: Separate Rachel from support network.
Phase Three: Remove parental rights.
Phase Four: Asset consolidation.
The final phase had no description.
Only two words.
Permanent Resolution.
The investigator looked at me.
"Do those words mean anything to you?"
I slowly shook my head.
"I've never seen this before."
No one in the room liked the sound of it.

Meanwhile, agents continued interviewing Peter.
He insisted Paige had manipulated him.
Paige insisted Peter had created the plan.
Each blamed the other.
Then an agent placed one final document on the table.
A signed retainer agreement.
Dated eleven months earlier.
Nearly a year before the fake DNA report.
The client name wasn't Peter.
It wasn't Paige.
It wasn't Helen.
It belonged to someone none of us expected.
Margaret Lawson.
Peter's grandmother.
The quiet eighty-two-year-old widow who had missed every family gathering because she was supposedly too ill to travel.
The investigator looked puzzled.
"Why would an eighty-two-year-old woman hire a private legal consultant to prepare these documents?"
Director Beck didn't answer.
Because at that exact moment, his phone rang.
He listened for less than thirty seconds before standing abruptly.
"What is it?" I asked.
He looked directly at me.
"Our field team just located Margaret Lawson."
"Where?"
He took a slow breath.
"She's not in a nursing home."
"She's living in a private estate..."
"...registered under Paige Mercer's company."
The room fell completely silent.
Then Director Beck said the words that made every investigator immediately stand up.
"I don't think Peter was ever the mastermind."
"I think someone else has been pulling the strings all along."
