PART 2
Monday morning arrived gray and humid.
At 7:30 a.m., Peter parked outside the downtown notary office wearing the same confident smile he had worn the night he ordered me out of our home.
Paige sat beside him, adjusting the sleeve of her expensive blazer.
"Once this is finished," she whispered, "she won't have enough money to hire a decent attorney."
Peter nodded.
"She'll never recover."
Behind them, Helen climbed out of another vehicle with Peter's brother and two relatives.
Each carried neatly organized folders.
Each believed they were about to help finalize the story they had rehearsed for weeks.
Commander Rachel Lawson—the irresponsible wife who had abandoned her family.
The mother who walked away.
The woman who supposedly disappeared after returning from deployment.
None of them knew every text message, every forged document, and every bank transfer already sat in the hands of federal investigators.

Across town, I buckled Maisie into her car seat.
She giggled, completely unaware that her future was about to change forever.
Director Thomas Beck met me outside the federal building.
"You ready?"
I looked at my daughter.
"I've survived wildfires that destroyed entire mountains."
I smiled softly.
"I can survive this."
Beck opened the passenger door.
"Today you won't be fighting alone."
Inside the conference room waited three investigators from the Department of Justice, two financial-crimes agents, and an assistant U.S. attorney.
A large screen displayed copies of Peter's messages.
Paige's instructions.
The fake DNA report.
The forged custody paperwork.
The property transfer documents.
Every file had been authenticated overnight.
One investigator leaned forward.
"Commander Lawson, we also subpoenaed the bank records."
He placed another folder in front of me.
"There wasn't sixty thousand dollars missing."
My stomach tightened.
"How much?"
He answered calmly.
"Ninety-four thousand, three hundred and eighteen dollars."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"They hid part of the transfers through three separate shell accounts."
Another investigator changed the screen.
Money moved from our joint account...
...into Paige's consulting company...
...then into an LLC...
...and finally into Peter's personal investment account.
"It wasn't random spending," the investigator explained.
"It was laundering."
Director Beck folded his arms.
"So this wasn't simply marital fraud."
"No."
The lead investigator looked directly at me.
"It appears to be conspiracy, forgery, identity fraud, financial theft, and attempted obstruction."
The room fell silent.
* * *
At exactly 8:02 a.m., Peter walked confidently into the notary office.
The receptionist smiled politely.
"Good morning."
"We're here for the Lawson transfer."
She nodded.
"Please have everyone take a seat."
Peter barely noticed two ordinary-looking people sitting quietly near the entrance.
They looked like any other clients.
They weren't.
One was an FBI financial investigator.
The other worked for the Inspector General's office.
At 8:08, the notary entered carrying a thick folder.
"Mr. Lawson?"
Peter stood.
"Everything prepared?"
"Almost."
The notary smiled.
"We're waiting for one final party."
Peter frowned.
"My wife isn't coming."
"Oh..."
The notary glanced toward the entrance.
"I wasn't referring to your wife."
The front doors opened.
Six federal agents walked inside.
"Peter Lawson?"
He turned slowly.
"Yes?"
One agent displayed a badge.
"We have a warrant authorizing the seizure of all documents relating to this property transfer."
The room froze.
Helen gasped.
Paige's face turned white.
"What is this?" Peter demanded.
Another investigator placed photographs on the table.
The fake DNA report.
Forged signatures.
Screenshots of messages.
Bank transfers.
The witness list.
Every lie.
Every step.
Every plan.
The lead agent spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
"You are being investigated for conspiracy to commit fraud, forgery, attempted theft by deception, and financial crimes."
Peter laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
"My wife abandoned us."
The investigator slid one photograph across the table.
It showed me leading wildfire evacuations in Idaho.
Date-stamped.
Official.
Another photo appeared.
Military travel records.
Deployment orders.
Emergency command logs.
"You knew exactly where your wife was."
Silence.
"You told multiple witnesses she had disappeared."
Silence again.
"You attempted to use forged documents to claim otherwise."
Peter looked toward Paige.
She immediately stepped backward.
"I didn't write those documents."
The investigator raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
He produced her laptop records.
Metadata.
Editing history.
Digital signatures.
Her account.
Her password.
Her IP address.
Paige's confidence vanished.

At that same moment, I sat in another room watching the entire operation through a secure video link.
Maisie slept peacefully beside me.
Director Beck handed me a cup of coffee.
"You know what's interesting?"
"What?"
"The fake DNA report."
He smiled slightly.
"It wasn't even their worst mistake."
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
He opened another evidence folder.
"They forged something much bigger."
Inside was a document I had never seen before.
Across the top were the words:
Emergency Survivor Benefit Authorization.
My blood ran cold.
Someone had tried to claim government compensation...
...using paperwork that falsely suggested I had died during deployment.
Director Beck looked at me gravely.
"They weren't just planning to steal your home."
"They were preparing to profit from your death."
And suddenly...
the entire investigation became far bigger than a broken marriage.
