PART 18 — THE LAST LIE MY FAMILY TOLD ME
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.
My father was standing in front of me.
Alive.
After six years of believing I had lost him.
After six years of mourning him.
After six years of building a life around his absence.
And now…
The first truth he gave me was the one I never wanted to hear.
“Your mother.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“No, that’s not possible.”
My father looked at me with pain in his eyes.
“I wish it wasn’t.”
I stepped back.
Because my entire life had been built around one belief.
My mother was the person who stayed.
My mother was the person who protected me.
My mother was the person who carried me through the hardest years.
“She loved me.”
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer confused me.
“Yes?”
“Yes, Claire.”
He walked closer.
“And that is what makes this harder.”
I looked at the file on the desk.
“The person who loves you can still make terrible choices.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t understand.”
“I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
I felt tears building.
“My mother was the only person who never left me.”
My father looked away.
“She never physically left you.”
The words hit me.
Because I knew what he meant.
Someone could stay beside you…
And still hide the truth.
“She knew about Preston.”
“Yes.”
“She knew about the Calloways.”
“Yes.”
“She knew you were alive.”
My father became silent.
That silence answered everything.
“She knew?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
My heart broke.
“My entire life…”
I couldn’t finish.
My father stepped forward.
“I never wanted you to carry this.”
“Then why?”
“Because I made a mistake.”
I looked at him.
“What mistake?”
“I trusted the wrong person.”
He walked toward the desk.
Then opened the file.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Everything.
“Your mother and I were partners.”
I froze.
“Partners?”
“Yes.”
“Before I was born?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
My father looked at the documents.
“To expose the Calloway family.”
I frowned.
“Then why would she betray you?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Because the answer was painful.
“Because she became afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing you.”
I looked confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
He showed me a photograph.
My mother.
Young.
Holding me as a baby.
Beside her was Marjorie Calloway.
I stared.
“What is this?”
“The agreement.”
“What agreement?”
My father’s voice became quiet.
“The agreement that kept you alive.”
I looked at him.
“Explain.”
“Years ago, when we discovered what the Calloways were doing, we realized we couldn’t fight them directly.”
“So what did you do?”
“We created a plan.”
“A plan?”
“Yes.”
“To destroy their empire from inside.”
I looked at the documents.
“And my mother?”
“She was supposed to help me.”
“But she didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
My father looked at me.
“Because they threatened you.”
The room became silent.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“They threatened a child?”
“They threatened to take you away.”
I felt sick.
“Who?”
My father hesitated.
Then answered:
“Marjorie.”
I looked down.
Everything was connected.
“My mother chose to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“But she also helped them.”
“Yes.”
The truth was complicated.
Not black.
Not white.
Just broken.
“She made a deal.”
I whispered.
My father nodded.
“She gave them information.”
“What information?”
“Information about my investigation.”
My stomach tightened.
“That’s why you disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Because she exposed you.”
He looked away.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
I didn’t know what emotion I was supposed to feel.
Anger?
Sadness?
Relief?
Nothing felt enough.
Then I saw another document.
A name.
PRESTON CALLOWAY.
I picked it up.
“What is this?”
My father looked at it.
“That is the reason you need to understand everything.”
I read the first line.
And my blood froze.
“Subject: Preston Calloway — Initial Contact Plan.”
I looked at my father.
“What is this?”
He sighed.
“The truth about your marriage.”
My hands trembled.
“You knew Preston would come into my life?”
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed something inside me.
“You knew?”
“I knew someone from the Calloway family would approach you.”
“But not him?”
“Not exactly.”
I looked at him.
“Then who?”
My father didn’t answer.
Instead, he turned on an old recording device.
A voice filled the room.
A voice I recognized.
My mother.
“Thomas, if you’re hearing this…”
I stopped breathing.
Her voice sounded younger.
Scared.
“I failed.”
My father closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“I tried to protect Claire.”
“But I made a choice that I can never undo.”
A pause.
“Because the person who started this entire plan…”
My heart began racing.
The voice became quieter.
“…was not the Calloways.”
I looked at my father.
He looked at me.
The recording continued.
“It was someone from our own family.”
The room went completely silent.
My mother’s voice whispered the final words:
“Thomas…”
“If Claire ever finds this…”
“Tell her the truth.”
“Her enemy was never outside the family.”
A pause.
“It was someone who shared her blood.”
The recording stopped.
I stood there frozen.
Someone in my family.
Someone who shared my blood.
My father slowly looked toward me.
And before he could speak…
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
“Stop searching, Claire.”
I opened the next message.
My hands went cold.
Because it contained a photograph.
A photograph taken inside my father’s office.
A photograph of me…
Standing beside him.
Taken only seconds ago.
Someone was watching us.
Someone was here.
Then the final message appeared.
“You found your father.”
“Now find the person who betrayed him.”
I looked toward the dark hallway.
Because suddenly I understood.
The truth was not the end.
It was only the beginning.
And the person who had been controlling this entire story…
Was still waiting in the shadows.
