PART 10 — THE MOTHER WHO KNEW HER SON’S DARK SIDE
For several seconds after Daniel said her name, I couldn’t speak.
“Marjorie Calloway.”
The woman who had sat behind Preston in court.
The woman who had looked at me like I was the enemy.
The woman who had spent months telling everyone that I was unstable.
She knew.
Not just about the affair.
Not just about the custody plan.
She knew about everything.
I looked at my son sleeping in the back seat.
His tiny chest rising and falling.
So innocent.
So unaware of the storm surrounding him.
And suddenly, the question that had been haunting me changed.
I was no longer asking:
“Why did Preston betray me?”
I was asking:
“How many people knew?”
“How many people watched?”
“How many people allowed it to happen?”
“Daniel,” I said quietly.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
He was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“Because Marjorie was the first person who warned Preston about your father.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Daniel continued.
“Before you and Preston got married, Marjorie discovered that your father had started looking into Preston’s background.”
I gripped the phone tighter.
“So she knew my father didn’t trust him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she let him marry me?”
Another pause.
And the answer hurt more than I expected.
“Because she thought it was a risk worth taking.”
I closed my eyes.
A risk.
That was how they saw my life.
My marriage.
My future.
My family.
A risk.
A strategy.
A calculation.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“What was Preston’s real plan?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
Because every time someone hesitated before answering a question about Preston, the truth was always worse than I expected.
“Claire…”
“Yes?”
“You need to understand something about the Calloway family.”
I waited.
“They don’t think like normal families.”
“What does that mean?”
“They don’t measure success by happiness.”
A pause.
“They measure it by power.”
The words stayed with me.
Because suddenly, everything made sense.
The expensive house.
The perfect image.
The endless obsession with reputation.
The way Preston cared more about appearances than feelings.
The way Marjorie defended him even when she knew he was wrong.
They weren’t protecting love.
They were protecting the family name.
“Daniel, why did my father choose Marjorie as Noah’s guardian?”
“That’s the part you need to understand.”
His voice became lower.
“Your father didn’t choose her because he trusted her completely.”
I frowned.
“Then why?”
“Because he knew she was the only person who could stop Preston.”
I felt a chill.
“The only person?”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the courthouse.
“Why?”
“Because Marjorie knows every weakness her son has.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because mothers often know their children better than anyone.
Their strengths.
Their fears.
Their secrets.
And maybe that was why Preston feared losing his mother’s loyalty.
Not because she could hurt him.
Because she could expose him.
“Daniel,” I said.
“I need to talk to her.”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
“Why?”
“Because if she knows you found out, she’ll know I helped you.”
“And?”
“Claire, Preston is not just angry when he loses control.”
A pause.
“He becomes dangerous.”
I looked at my son.
My entire body went cold.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying you need to be careful.”
Those words frightened me more than any threat.
Because Daniel wasn’t dramatic.
He wasn’t someone who exaggerated.
He was someone who had spent six years watching Preston.
And if he was worried…
I needed to listen.
That night, I returned to my temporary apartment.
Not the house Preston and I once shared.
Not the place where every room carried memories.
A small apartment with white walls and almost no furniture.
A place that was supposed to be temporary.
But somehow felt safer.
I placed Noah in his crib.
Then I sat at the kitchen table with all the documents around me.
The first binder.
The second binder.
My father’s letter.
Everything that proved the life I believed in had been built on secrets.
I was exhausted.
But I couldn’t sleep.
Because one thought kept returning.
Why would Marjorie help my father protect Noah?
Unless…
Unless she knew Preston was capable of something worse.
At midnight, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
For a moment, I considered ignoring it.
Then I answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice responded.
“Claire.”
I froze.
Because I recognized it immediately.
Marjorie.
“How did you get this number?” I asked.
“I have always had it.”
The calmness in her voice made me uncomfortable.
“Why are you calling me?”
Silence.
Then she said:
“Because you need to know the truth before Preston tells his version first.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What truth?”
Her voice became softer.
“The truth about why my son married you.”
My heart raced.
“I already know.”
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
“You know part of it.”
I stood up.
“What are you talking about?”
Marjorie took a deep breath.
“Preston did not marry you only because of your inheritance.”
I waited.
“Then why?”
Another pause.
And then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because your father was not the first person who tried to stop him.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Claire…”
Her voice shook slightly.
“For years, Preston has been hiding something about the Calloway family.”
I looked at the documents spread across my table.
“What?”
The next words changed everything.
“Your husband did not create this plan alone.”
My heart stopped.
“Someone helped him.”
“Who?”
Marjorie whispered:
“Someone you have trusted for years.”
The phone went silent.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
I realized the betrayal was not coming only from my husband.
It was coming from someone much closer.
Someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.
