PART 7 — THE FILE FRANKLIN HID BEFORE HE DIED
The USB drive sat on the kitchen table for almost ten minutes.
Neither Gareth nor I touched it.
It was such a small object.
Something most people would ignore.
But we both knew it carried something much heavier than files.
It carried answers.
And sometimes answers are more frightening than questions.
I looked at my son.
“Where exactly did you find this?”
Gareth took a deep breath.
“In Sandra’s desk drawer.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Why would she keep something like this?”
“I don’t know.”
He looked at the USB drive.
“But I think she forgot I could find it.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because for the first time, Gareth wasn’t defending her.
He was investigating her.
I walked to Franklin’s old desk.
The same desk where he used to work late at night.
The same desk where he wrote notes, paid bills, and planned our future.
I took out his old laptop.
Gareth looked surprised.
“You kept it?”
“Yes.”
“Does it still work?”
I smiled faintly.
“Your father kept everything.”
That was true.
Franklin never threw away things he considered important.
He believed every document had a story.
Every note had a purpose.
I connected the USB drive.
A folder appeared.
The name made my heart stop.
OPERATION FRANKLIN
Gareth looked at me.
“Mom…”
I clicked the folder.
Inside were dozens of files.
Documents.
Emails.
Audio recordings.
Photos.
The first file was dated two years before Franklin died.
The title:
“Family Risk Assessment.”
I opened it.
The first sentence appeared:
“The greatest danger to a person’s life is not an enemy they know. It is someone who knows how much they trust them.”
I felt a chill.
Because those were Franklin’s words.
He had always believed trust was precious.
But now I understood.
He wasn’t just speaking generally.
He was warning someone.
Me.
The next pages contained information about our family.
About Sandra.
About Gareth.
About financial decisions I never knew existed.
I looked at my son.
“Your father was watching them.”
Gareth swallowed.
“Why didn’t he tell us?”
I continued reading.
Then I found a section titled:
“Sandra Whitmore.”
My hands became cold.
The report described changes Franklin noticed after Gareth married Sandra.
Small things at first.
Questions about money.
Questions about inheritance.
Questions about the house.
Questions about what would happen if Franklin was gone.
None of them seemed suspicious individually.
But together…
They created a pattern.
A pattern Franklin had noticed.
I turned to Gareth.
“Did your father ever talk to you about Sandra?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Never?”
“No.”
I looked back at the screen.
That was Franklin.
He didn’t accuse.
He collected evidence.
The next file was an audio recording.
The date was six months before Franklin passed away.
Gareth and I looked at each other.
“Play it,” he whispered.
I pressed the button.
At first, there was only silence.
Then voices.
Sandra.
And another person.
The same person from Franklin’s warning.
My heart raced.
Sandra’s voice was clear.
“We need to move faster.”
The other person replied:
“Not yet.”
“She still trusts us.”
“That’s exactly why we wait.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
They were talking about me.
Sandra continued:
“Once Franklin is gone, everything becomes easier.”
Gareth immediately stood up.
“What?”
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.”
The recording continued.
The other voice said:
“The house is the key.”
Sandra answered:
“She won’t give it up willingly.”
A pause.
Then:
“She doesn’t have to.”
The room went silent.
My son looked devastated.
Because hearing it directly was different from seeing documents.
This was real.
This was a conversation.
A plan.
A betrayal.
Then the voice said something that made both of us freeze.
“Remember, Gareth is already on our side.”
My son stepped back.
“No.”
His face turned pale.
“No, that’s not true.”
I looked at him.
And I knew.
He was hearing this for the first time.
The recording continued.
“He doesn’t even know what he signed.”
Sandra laughed softly.
“He trusts his wife.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Gareth looked broken.
“They used me.”
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew that was true.
But I also knew something else.
He had still signed.
He had still failed to question.
And that was something he would have to face.
After several minutes, he whispered:
“Who was the other person?”
I looked back at the screen.
The file contained no name.
Only a voice.
A voice Franklin had identified.
Then I noticed another folder.
Hidden.
Encrypted.
The name:
FINAL MESSAGE FOR LINDSEY
My heart stopped.
A message from Franklin.
Created shortly before he died.
I clicked it.
A video opened.
Franklin appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
I covered my mouth.
Because seeing him again after so long felt impossible.
“Lindsey…”
His voice filled the room.
“If you are watching this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.”
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
He continued.
“I wanted to protect you from this.”
A pause.
“But I also knew there might come a time when you needed the truth more than you needed comfort.”
Gareth stood silently beside me.
Franklin looked directly into the camera.
“The person you need to be careful of is not Sandra.”
I froze.
Not Sandra?
Then who?
Franklin continued.
“It is someone who has been part of our family for a very long time.”
The video paused for a moment.
Then he said the sentence that changed everything.
“Lindsey, the person who betrayed us…”
“…is someone you love.”
The screen went black.
And beneath the video file appeared one final document.
A name.
The name of the person Franklin believed was behind everything.
I clicked.
And when I saw it…
I couldn’t move.
Because the person Franklin warned me about…
Was the last person I ever expected.
My own child.
Gareth Holloway.
I slowly looked at my son.
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if the person standing beside me was the person I needed to protect myself from.
