PART 13 — THE FATHER WHO HID THE TRUTH
For several seconds…
Nobody looked at Graham.
Nobody knew what to say.
Because the photograph on the screen showed something impossible.
Seven years ago.
The day Noah was born.
A man standing outside the hospital room.
Watching.
Waiting.
* * *
Graham Whitmore.
* * *
Noah looked at his father.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
With confusion.
The kind of confusion that hurts more than anger.
Because anger means you understand.
Confusion means the person you trusted has become someone you don’t recognize.
* * *
“Dad?”
Noah’s voice was small.
“Why were you there?”
* * *
Graham didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
As if he was trying to convince himself that what he saw wasn’t real.
* * *
“I…”
He stopped.
For the first time in my life…
I saw Graham speechless.
* * *
“Graham.”
My voice was calm.
But everyone knew.
This was not a question.
It was a demand.
* * *
“Explain.”
* * *
He took a deep breath.
“I was there because…”
He looked at Noah.
“Because I was afraid.”
* * *
Noah frowned.
“Afraid of what?”
* * *
Graham looked down.
“Of losing you.”
* * *
The answer surprised everyone.
* * *
“You knew about Project Genesis?”
I asked.
* * *
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
* * *
The room became silent.
* * *
“I found out before you gave birth.”
* * *
My heart tightened.
“Before I gave birth?”
* * *
Graham looked at me.
“I received a report.”
* * *
“What report?”
* * *
“A report about children who showed unusual cognitive patterns.”
* * *
Daniel stepped forward.
“And you investigated.”
* * *
Graham looked at him.
“Yes.”
* * *
Daniel’s expression became cold.
“You continued the research.”
* * *
“No.”
Graham immediately shook his head.
“I stopped it.”
* * *
Nobody spoke.
* * *
“I discovered what they were doing.”
Graham continued.
“They weren’t studying children anymore.”
* * *
His voice became lower.
“They were selecting them.”
* * *
A chill moved through me.
* * *
“Selecting them for what?”
* * *
Graham looked at Noah.
“For influence.”
* * *
The room became colder.
* * *
“They believed these children would become the people who shaped the future.”
* * *
Dr. Carter whispered:
“They were creating a network.”
* * *
Graham nodded.
“Yes.”
* * *
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
* * *
That question hurt more than anything.
* * *
Because no matter what explanation he gave…
He still hid the truth.
* * *
Graham closed his eyes.
“Because I thought I could handle it myself.”
* * *
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was the same mistake he always made.
* * *
“You thought you could control it.”
* * *
He looked away.
“Yes.”
* * *
The silence was painful.
Because that was Graham’s greatest weakness.
Not his ambition.
Not his intelligence.
His belief that everything could be solved if he was powerful enough.
* * *
“And Noah?”
I asked.
“What did you do?”
* * *
Graham’s expression changed.
* * *
“I protected him.”
* * *
Noah looked at him.
“By hiding things from me?”
* * *
Graham flinched.
* * *
“I was trying to give you a normal life.”
* * *
Noah shook his head.
“A normal life where everyone knew something about me except me?”
* * *
Nobody had an answer.
* * *
Because Noah was right.
* * *
Graham walked closer.
“I was wrong.”
* * *
Those words surprised me.
Because Graham Whitmore rarely admitted mistakes.
* * *
“I thought if I kept you away from that world…”
He looked at Noah.
“You could just be my son.”
* * *
Noah’s eyes filled with emotion.
* * *
“Then why did you spend years looking for brilliant minds?”
* * *
Graham froze.
* * *
The question was simple.
But it destroyed him.
* * *
Because Noah wasn’t asking about science.
He was asking:
Why was I never enough?
* * *
Graham lowered his head.
“I don’t know.”
* * *
A painful silence followed.
* * *
Then Daniel spoke.
“There is something else.”
* * *
Everyone turned.
* * *
“Of course there is.”
I whispered.
* * *
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
* * *
Daniel opened the surveillance file.
“The photograph was not taken by Project Genesis.”
* * *
I frowned.
“What?”
* * *
He pointed at the metadata.
“This camera belonged to Graham.”
* * *
My heart stopped.
* * *
“What does that mean?”
* * *
Daniel looked at Graham.
“You weren’t just watching.”
* * *
A pause.
* * *
“You were recording.”
* * *
Noah stepped back.
* * *
“Why?”
* * *
Graham looked devastated.
“I wasn’t recording you.”
* * *
“Then who?”
* * *
Graham looked at Daniel.
* * *
“The people watching you.”
* * *
Everyone froze.
* * *
Graham explained:
“I knew someone inside the hospital was working with Project Genesis.”
* * *
“So you placed cameras?”
I asked.
* * *
“Yes.”
* * *
“Without telling me?”
* * *
His silence answered.
* * *
I felt betrayed.
Even if his intention was protection…
He still made decisions without us.
* * *
Then Noah noticed something.
He looked at the screen.
“Wait.”
* * *
Everyone turned.
* * *
“What?”
* * *
Noah pointed at the photograph.
“Zoom in.”
* * *
Dr. Carter enlarged the image.
* * *
At first, nothing changed.
Then we saw it.
* * *
Behind Graham…
Standing at the end of the hallway.
Watching him.
Watching Noah.
* * *
Another person.
* * *
Someone who had been there before anyone else.
* * *
Noah whispered:
“Who is that?”
* * *
Graham’s face suddenly lost all color.
* * *
Because he recognized the person.
* * *
“No…”
* * *
I looked at him.
“Who?”
* * *
His voice barely came out.
* * *
“That’s impossible.”
* * *
Daniel stared at the image.
Then his expression changed.
* * *
“Graham.”
* * *
“Who is it?”
* * *
Graham looked at us.
* * *
“The person who created Project Genesis.”
* * *
The room went silent.
* * *
“But that person…”
I whispered.
“Is dead.”
* * *
Graham nodded.
* * *
“Yes.”
* * *
A pause.
* * *
“That’s why I thought we were safe.”
* * *
The photograph remained on the screen.
A person who was supposed to be gone.
A person who had controlled everything from the shadows.
* * *
And then…
Noah noticed something else.
A detail nobody else saw.
* * *
“Dad…”
* * *
Graham looked at him.
* * *
“Why is that person holding a picture of me?”
* * *
Everyone froze.
* * *
Because in the stranger’s hand…
Was a photograph.
A photograph of Noah.
Taken years before he was born.
* * *
And suddenly we understood.
* * *
They weren’t searching for Noah after he was born.
* * *
They were waiting for him before he existed.
* * *
The question was no longer:
Why did they choose Noah?
* * *
The real question was:
Who chose Noah before his parents even knew he was coming?
