PART 9 — THE ACCOUNT THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE FOUND
The words stayed in my mind all night.
More than $100 million.
I had spent weeks believing Adrian’s greatest betrayal was the divorce.
I thought he wanted to erase me from his life.
I thought he wanted to replace me with someone younger, someone more useful to his ambitions.
But I was wrong.
The divorce was only a distraction.
The real plan was much bigger.
Adrian wasn’t trying to leave me.
He was trying to disappear.
* * *
The next morning, Daniel arrived at my house with a thick folder.
He placed it on the table.
“This is everything we have so far.”
I opened it.
Inside were bank records, company documents, and communication logs.
Every page revealed another layer of Adrian’s deception.
For years, he had presented himself as a successful businessman.
A man who created opportunities.
A man who protected his investors.
But behind the public image was a completely different reality.
He had created multiple private companies.
Moved funds between accounts.
Used fake consulting agreements.
And slowly transferred money away from Whitmore Crest Holdings.
“He was preparing for this for years,” Daniel said.
I looked up.
“How long?”
He hesitated.
“Since before your marriage.”
The room became silent.
Before my marriage.
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because they confirmed what I feared.
My entire relationship with Adrian had been built on a foundation of lies.
* * *
Daniel pointed to one document.
“This is the most important piece.”
I looked down.
It was a transfer agreement.
The recipient name was hidden.
But the signature was clear.
Adrian’s.
“What is this?”
Daniel took a breath.
“This account wasn’t created for Claire.”
I frowned.
“But Claire’s name was connected to it.”
“Yes.”
He tapped the page.
“She was only a temporary holder.”
My heart sank.
“Temporary?”
“Yes.”
“The real beneficiary is someone else.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel slowly turned the document around.
And when I saw the name, I froze.
Because it was impossible.
The account was connected to…
My mother.
Margaret Carter.
* * *
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
No anger.
No tears.
Just disbelief.
My own mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who told me to forgive Adrian.
The woman who watched me lose my marriage.
She was connected to the money.
I stood up.
“No.”
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Elena.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“There has to be another explanation.”
“I thought the same thing.”
He opened another file.
“But we traced the transactions.”
He placed the timeline in front of me.
Payments.
Transfers.
Dates.
And every path led back to the same place.
My mother had received money from Adrian.
Not once.
Not accidentally.
Repeatedly.
* * *
I called her immediately.
She answered after the third ring.
“Elena?”
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Mom, I need you to answer one question.”
A pause.
“What question?”
“Did Adrian pay you?”
Silence.
The kind of silence that gives an answer before words do.
My eyes closed.
“Mom…”
She finally whispered.
“I never wanted it to happen this way.”
My heart broke.
Not because she admitted it.
Because she still wasn’t saying she was sorry.
She was saying she regretted being caught.
“How long?”
“Elena…”
“How long did you know?”
Her voice trembled.
“Almost from the beginning.”
I sat down.
The room felt smaller.
“He told me he would protect our family.”
I laughed quietly.
“Our family?”
“Yes.”
“No, Mom.”
My voice cracked.
“He protected himself.”
She started crying.
“I thought I was helping you.”
I looked out the window.
“By helping my husband betray me?”
“I thought he would stay with you.”
The sentence cut deeper than anything.
“You knew he planned to leave?”
Another silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
I couldn’t breathe.
My mother knew.
She knew Adrian would abandon me.
She knew he was preparing everything.
And she let me believe I was fighting alone.
* * *
That evening, I returned to Daniel’s office.
“I want everything.”
He looked at me.
“Everything?”
“All evidence.”
“Elena, if you continue, this becomes a criminal investigation.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“And it could destroy your mother too.”
I looked down.
For years, I had protected everyone.
My husband.
My family.
My reputation.
But nobody protected me.
“I’m not doing this because I want revenge.”
Daniel waited.
“I’m doing this because if I stop now, Adrian wins.”
* * *
The next day, federal investigators arrived at Whitmore Crest Holdings.
The news spread within hours.
“Major Financial Investigation Opens Into Whitmore Crest Holdings.”
Adrian’s world began collapsing.
But then something unexpected happened.
A message arrived from an unknown number.
One sentence.
“You think Adrian is the mastermind. You’re wrong.”
I stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
“He was working for someone else.”
My heart started racing.
Someone else?
For twelve years, I believed Adrian controlled everything.
The money.
The lies.
The betrayal.
But what if he wasn’t the person behind it all?
What if Adrian Whitmore…
Was only a piece of a much larger plan?
Then the final message arrived.
And it revealed a name I never expected to see.
“Ask your grandfather why he never told you about the Whitmore family.”
I froze.
Because my grandfather had always warned me about Adrian.
But he never told me the truth about Adrian’s family.
And suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe my grandfather didn’t leave me evidence because he knew Adrian would betray me.
Maybe he left it because he knew…
The entire Whitmore family was dangerous.
