PART 10 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE WHITMORE FAMILY NAME
For the first time in twelve years, I questioned everything.
Not just my marriage.
Not just Adrian.
Everything.
The Whitmore family had always appeared untouchable.
A respected name.
A powerful company.
A legacy built over generations.
But now I understood something.
Powerful families rarely collapse because of one mistake.
They collapse because of secrets buried for too long.
And someone had just opened the door.
* * *
The next morning, Daniel arrived with a new file.
He placed it on my desk.
“I found something about Adrian’s grandfather.”
I looked at him.
“His grandfather?”
Daniel nodded.
“The original founder of Whitmore Crest Holdings.”
I opened the file.
Inside were old newspaper articles.
Business records.
Court documents.
And one photograph.
A photograph of two families standing together.
The Whitmores.
And my grandfather.
I stared at the image.
“Why were they together?”
Daniel looked serious.
“That’s the question.”
I read the article attached to the photo.
It described a partnership from thirty years earlier.
A partnership nobody had ever mentioned.
My grandfather and Adrian’s grandfather had built a business agreement together.
But then something happened.
The partnership ended suddenly.
The companies separated.
And both families never spoke publicly about it again.
“Why did my grandfather hide this?”
Daniel turned another page.
“Because the separation wasn’t peaceful.”
I continued reading.
Then I saw the name.
Charles Whitmore.
Adrian’s grandfather.
The man who created the foundation of their empire.
According to the documents, Charles Whitmore had accused my grandfather of stealing company ideas.
But the evidence was never proven.
The case disappeared.
The partnership ended.
And both families moved on.
Or so everyone thought.
I looked at Daniel.
“Adrian knew about this?”
“We don’t know.”
“But he married me because of my family.”
Daniel nodded.
“That is what the evidence suggests.”
I closed the file.
“Then this was never just about money.”
“No.”
Daniel’s expression became darker.
“This may have started before you were even born.”

That afternoon, I received another message.
This time, there was an attachment.
A scanned letter.
The sender was unknown.
I opened it.
And immediately recognized the handwriting.
My grandfather.
The letter was written years before his death.
Charles Whitmore never forgave our family. He believes I destroyed his legacy. But the truth is something far more dangerous. The Whitmores are not trying to rebuild what they lost. They are trying to take back what they believe belongs to them.
My hands tightened around the phone.
I continued reading.
Elena, if Adrian ever becomes your enemy, do not fight him alone. He is not the beginning of this story. He is only the next generation of it.
I stopped.
The next generation.
Those words stayed with me.
Because suddenly, Adrian’s actions made more sense.
The secret account.
The marriage.
The divorce.
The betrayal.
Maybe Adrian didn’t see me as a wife.
Maybe he saw me as the final piece of an old family conflict.
* * *
That evening, I went to my mother’s house.
She opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.
“You found out.”
I stared at her.
“You knew about the Whitmore family.”
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Before you met Adrian.”
The pain was different this time.
Because I had already accepted that she betrayed me.
But I hadn’t accepted that she knew the truth before I ever fell in love.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
My mother looked away.
“Because I thought I could control it.”
I almost laughed.
“Everyone thinks they can control Adrian.”
She sat down.
“He promised me he would protect our family.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“He promised you power.”
Silence.
And that silence confirmed everything.
* * *
Then my mother said something unexpected.
“There is one thing you don’t know.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Adrian wasn’t the first person from the Whitmore family to approach us.”
My heart stopped.
“Who was?”
She hesitated.
“His father.”
I frowned.
“Richard Whitmore?”
She nodded.
“Years before Adrian married you, Richard came to see your grandfather.”
“What did he want?”
My mother’s voice became quiet.
“He wanted the Carter family to return something.”
“Return what?”
She looked directly at me.
“The company shares your grandfather received after the original partnership ended.”
I froze.
“That’s impossible.”
“Your grandfather believed those shares belonged to your family.”
“And the Whitmores believed they were stolen.”
My mother nodded.
“Yes.”
I stood there silently.
All these years, I thought Adrian betrayed me because he wanted a better life.
But maybe the truth was much darker.
Maybe he married me because his family had been waiting decades for a chance to reclaim something.
* * *
That night, I returned home and found an envelope under my door.
No name.
No address.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Adrian.
But not with Claire.
Not with Victoria.
With someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
The date on the photograph was from six months before my divorce.
Before Adrian gave me the papers.
Before the secret account was discovered.
And underneath the photograph was one sentence:
“Adrian did not betray you alone.”
I stared at the image.
Because standing beside him…
Was my lawyer.
Daniel Hayes.
My heart stopped.
The one person helping me uncover the truth…
Might have been part of the lie from the beginning.
