PART 3 – Turbulence and Confessions
The aircraft shook violently as we flew into the edge of the thunderstorm system. The 'fasten seatbelts' sign flashed brightly, and the flight attendants were immediately ordered to take their seats. Vittoria was startled by the sudden jolt and started crying loudly. Her frightened wails cut to the bone, and in a panic I tried to press her tightly against me while the plane took another hard dive downward.
"Hand her to me!" Luca shouted over the roar of the engines.
"What? No, I've got it!" I yelled back, but another jerk of the aircraft hit us both. My hands were trembling so much I could barely keep a grip on her.
Without asking further permission, Luca stepped in with firm, strong hands. With a professional calmness that only someone with thousands of flight hours could muster, he skillfully slid Vittoria onto his own lap and placed a reassuring hand on her back. To my utter amazement, Vittoria almost instantly stopped crying. She looked up with big, tear-filled eyes at the man in the pilot's jacket, fascinated by the silver buttons and his deep, calm voice talking softly to her.
"Easy now, little hero. The pilot has everything under control, even though I happen to be sitting in the back today," he said with a warm, resonant laugh.
I watched breathlessly. The harsh, tense man from a moment ago seemed to have vanished instantly, replaced by a protective figure who unexpectedly touched me deeply. My own heart pounded wildly in my throat—not just from the turbulence, but from the way Luca handled my child. It stood in sharp contrast to Stefano, who had barely touched his daughter in the last months of our marriage, too busy with his mistress and his luxurious life.
"Thank you," I said when the worst shock had passed and the plane was gliding somewhat more stably through the clouds. My voice was still trembling.
Luca looked up at me. His eyes were dark and thoughtful in the dimmed light of the cabin. "You're welcome. I know what it feels like to lose control, Elena."
I stiffened. "How... how do you know my name?"
A faint, sad smile appeared on his lips. He subtly pointed to the luggage tag still hanging from my bag's handle, which listed my full name. "You read fast when you're bored. Besides... I saw the papers in your bag when you were looking for your boarding pass at the gate."
"You were observing me?" I asked, a hint of my old distrust bubbling back to the surface.
"Not out of curiosity," he defended himself immediately, his voice soft and sincere. "But you looked so lonely. As if you were carrying the whole world on your shoulders. And believe me... I recognize that look. I've been through hell myself lately. A divorce, lost friendships, a career at stake because people prefer to lie rather than face the truth."
I felt a sudden, deep connection with this stranger. The walls I had carefully built after Stefano's betrayal seemed to crack under the warmth of his words.
"My husband lied about everything," I blurted out suddenly, unable to stop myself. The words burned on my lips. "For two years. As if I were a stranger in his house."
Luca took my hand. His skin was warm and strong. "Then we both know what it feels like to be betrayed by someone you trusted."
At that moment, as we sat there thousands of feet up amidst dark clouds, something unexpected happened. Luca slowly leaned forward, his face dangerously close to mine. The world around us seemed to fade. But just when I thought he was going to kiss me, the plane's intercom crackled to life.
