PART 6 – The Secret Left Hidden

I stared at the message on my phone for entire minutes. My fingers didn't move. My thoughts had stopped. The message came from Teresa's number, but it was impossible. Her phone was probably somewhere in a box with her things. She had died three days ago. Yet on the screen was a message with words that made my whole body stiffen.

"Paolo, I'm not the only one your mother kept hidden."

I re-read the sentence over and over again. My first thought was that someone had made a mistake. Maybe Daniel had sent it. Maybe he wanted to tell me something and had used her phone. But why would he write as if he were Teresa? I called back immediately. After a few seconds the call was disconnected. I tried again. Same thing. My heart began to beat faster. There was something I didn't understand.

The next morning I called Daniel. He answered right away. "Paolo?" His voice sounded like someone who already knew something was wrong. "Did you send me a message last night?" I asked without greetings. There was silence. "What message?" he finally asked. I swallowed. "From Teresa's phone." On the other end I heard only his breathing. "That's impossible," he said softly. "Why?" I asked. "Because yesterday I turned off her phone and put it in her room." I felt a cold chill run down my spine. "Daniel... someone sent me a message."

That afternoon we met again. Daniel looked tense. He had brought Teresa's phone with him. "I checked everything," he said. "There are no messages sent." He showed me the screen. Indeed there was nothing. No messages. No calls. No activity. I felt increasingly confused. Daniel looked at me. "Paolo, what exactly did it say?" I repeated the sentence. His expression slowly changed. "It seems my mother knew something." "What do you mean?" I asked. He pulled an old folder from his bag.

"There's something I haven't told you yet."

My heart sank.

Daniel opened the folder and pulled out some documents. "When I cleaned up my mother's things, I found these papers." He slid them in front of me. "They talk about your past." I looked at the documents. My name was on top. My date of birth. Details I knew. But there was something strange. A name I had never seen was next to Elena's.

"Who is he?" I asked.

Daniel looked at the paper.

"The man who, according to my mother, is responsible for her losing you."

I felt my hands turn cold.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"His name was Victor."

The name meant nothing to me. But Daniel seemed afraid to say it. "Who was he?" I asked. He sighed. "Someone who had a lot of influence back then. He helped people with official documents. He knew the right people. My mother trusted him." I looked at the papers. "And what did he do?" Daniel looked at me. "He made sure Elena couldn't find you anymore."

I felt anger rise.

"Why would anyone do such a thing?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Because he wanted to hide something."

The silence between us became heavy. For the first time I began to understand that my past perhaps wasn't just made of pain. Maybe someone had deliberately taken away a part of my life.

Daniel gave me one last document. "I found it at the bottom of the folder." It was an old letter. Not from Elena. Not from Victor. But from someone I didn't know. The letter had never been sent. At the top was written only:

"To Paolo, when he is old enough to understand the truth."

My heart skipped a beat.

I started to read.

"Dear Paolo, if you ever receive this letter, it means the truth has finally come to light. I know you may have many questions. Maybe you wonder why no one ever told you what really happened. But believe me: there were people trying to protect you."

I stopped for a moment.

People trying to protect you?

Or people hiding the truth?

I kept reading.

"Your mother never gave up. She never chose to leave. There was someone who made sure you lost each other."

My breath caught.

But the next sentence completely immobilized me.

"Paolo, the person who stopped your mother from finding you... is someone you've known all your life."

I looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

But Daniel didn't say anything.

He just looked at the letter.

And then he whispered:

"Paolo... I think you need to know who kept your true family hidden all these years."
