PART 12 — The Judgment of Time
It is now nearly the end of the year, exactly twelve months since I was put out on the doorstep on New Year's Eve with a bowl of oliebollen in my hands. The wind howls around the corners of the house on Lindelaan again, but this time the cold doesn't feel biting. Inside, the fireplace is burning, and the scent of freshly baked oliebollen fills the warm living room.
I stand by the window, looking out at the street where the first fireworks are already being cautiously set off. Life has taught me never to confuse age with weakness. People thought I was an old, worn-out man who could be pushed into the wings of life. But they forgot that the roots of someone who has built everything with love and integrity are anchored deep in the ground.
Clara's ruby-red chest sits on the mantelpiece, neatly dusted. Not as a secret treasure, but as a reminder of the wisdom of a woman who was way ahead of her time. She knew that Jons would one day stumble over his own arrogance. She knew that at that decisive moment, I would find the strength to choose the truth instead of a false world of appearances.
The doorbell rings. I walk calmly to the hallway and open the front door.
There stands Noah, with a wide grin on his face and a homemade beanie on his head. Behind him stands Jons, hesitant, with pulled-in shoulders and a look of deep regret in his eyes. He looks at me, barely daring to open his mouth, but then says in a soft, frightened voice:
"Dad... may I... may I come in? Even if it's just to talk to Noah for a moment?"
I look at my son. The anger has long since disappeared, replaced by a deep, serene calm. I know the road to forgiveness will be long, and trust will never completely be what it was. But on this New Year's Eve, on the threshold of a new year, I open the door a little further.
"Come in, Jons," I quietly say. "It's cold outside."
And as the three of us sit around the kitchen table with a bowl full of oliebollen and powdered sugar, I know the old year's secret has done its work. It has not only destroyed the lies, but it has also cleared the way for an honest, true beginning.
