PART 8 – THE PROOF IN THE SAFE

Daniel took a step back, clenching his fists in frustration, but the threat in his eyes had vanished. He knew he had lost. Without saying another word, he turned, got into his car, and sped off with screeching tires. Sofia remained behind for a moment, stunned. She looked at me with an expression that alternated between remorse and hatred. “You'll regret this, Mom,” she whispered bitterly.

Then she too turned around, got into her car, and followed her brother. I was left alone in the driveway. The silence that returned was peaceful, but the aftermath of the confrontation left a deep mark on my soul. My children were not the people I thought I loved. They had become strangers, shaped by greed and selfishness. But I was no longer alone.

I had the house, I had my mother's legacy, and above all, I had regained my dignity. I walked toward the front door, inserted the key into the lock, and went inside. The house no longer felt cold and abandoned. It felt like a true home. A place where the ghosts of the past had finally found peace. That evening, I decided to thoroughly clean out the study.

I wanted to search through all the boxes to see if there were other letters or documents my mother had left behind. While I was tidying up, my gaze fell upon a heavy metal safe hidden behind an old bookshelf. I hadn't noticed it earlier in the day because it was covered by a heavy blanket. I went back to the desk drawer where my mother kept all her keys.

In the middle of the ring was a small, black key with a gold rim. I returned to the safe, inserted the key into the lock, and turned it. With a light click, the heavy metal door swung open. What was inside was something I wouldn't have expected even in my wildest dreams. No money, no documents about debts, but a photo album with a handwritten letter on the first page.

I opened the book and began to read. The first sentence made me catch my breath. “My most beloved daughter, if you find this, it means you have found the strength to choose your own path. But there is still one secret I have never told anyone. A secret about your past that will change everything…” My hands began to shake. What else could be hidden? What secret from my past had my mother carried with her to her death?
