PART 11 – THE ARCHIVE OF SHADOWS

The man who opened the door was old, with a weather-beaten face full of scars and gray hair, but his gaze was still frighteningly alert. He motioned us inside quickly, pulled us in, and locked the heavy metal door behind us.

We found ourselves in a huge room filled with shelves of filing cabinets, old computers, and dossiers. It smelled of paper, dust, and strong coffee.

“I thought your father would have made you disappear long ago,” the old man said, walking toward us. He introduced himself as Victor, a former criminal investigator who had tried in vain for decades to dismantle the syndicate.

My brother placed the canvas bag on a metal desk and brought out the red box. He slid the lid back and spread Mom's letters, photos, and notebook out on the table.

Victor examined the documents with intense concentration. He picked up one of the letters and read a few lines.

“This... this is the evidence we've been looking for for twelve years,” he whispered. “With these signatures and bank transfers, we can bring down the true masterminds of the syndicate. Not just your father, but the people truly pulling the strings.”

“Why did father keep all of this?” I asked quietly.

Victor turned to me. “Because in this world, you are never truly free. Your father wanted out, but they wouldn't let him. He kept this box as life insurance, in case they betrayed him. And when your mother found it... that sealed her doom.”

Suddenly, a loud noise echoed from outside.

Clatter!

The sound of glass being smashed on the ground floor. Victor froze. He reached into the drawer of his desk and pulled out a pistol.

“They're here,” he said through clenched teeth. “They tracked us down.”
