Part 6: The Hidden Will
The smell of disinfectant and coffee in the Amsterdam-Center police station is sharp. After the officers take me in and hear my story about the attack in the canal house, I am led into a small meeting room. Not long after, the door opens and lawyer Harrison steps in, accompanied by a plainclothes detective, Inspector De Jong. "Lucas, are you hurt?" Harrison asks anxiously as he sits down in a chair opposite me.
I shake my head and pull the blue dossier from my backpack. I place it on the table and tell them about Marcus and my father's threats. Inspector De Jong flips through the dossier, his eyebrows knitting together in an increasingly deep frown. "This is explosive material," he says seriously. "This not only proves large-scale fraud, but also contains medical reports on the final days of Mrs.
Evelyn Vance. It states in black and white that barbiturates were found in her blood — substances that forced her heart failure." A chill runs down my spine. My own mother and father murdered grandma to seize the entire inheritance before she could name her grandson as sole heir. "But there's more," lawyer Harrison says softly. He slides a second, smaller document forward that was at the bottom of the dossier.
"This is the real, untainted will that Mrs. Evelyn had drawn up two days before her death. Not only does she leave everything to you, Lucas... there is a clause specifying that any member of the Vance family guilty of fraud is immediately excluded from any form of compensation, and their private assets will be seized." The door of the meeting room flies open. Inspector De Jong looks up as an out-of-breath officer enters. "Inspector, we received a report. Victor Vance's villa is engulfed in flames."
