Chapter 4 – The Inheritance No One Knew Existed

Daan landed in Barcelona just before sunset.

He went straight from the airport to the hotel where Sanne had been staying.

"I'm looking for Mrs. Sanne Visser."

The receptionist checked the computer before offering a polite smile.

"I'm sorry, sir. She checked out about twenty minutes ago."

Daan's heart sank.

"Did she leave a forwarding address?"

"I'm afraid we can't disclose that information."

He walked outside and immediately called Sanne again.

This time...

She answered.

"Daan."

Relief washed over him.

"Sanne, please. We need to talk."

There was a brief silence.

"About the house?" she asked calmly.

"Yes."

"I'm afraid it's no longer just about the house."

"What do you mean?"

"You'll find out soon enough."

The line went dead.

At that very moment, Sanne sat across from her late father's longtime attorney.

He placed a weathered wooden box on the table.

"Your father instructed me to give this to you only after your divorce became final."

Sanne stared at the box in disbelief.

"My father knew?"

"He suspected that one day someone would value your inheritance more than your happiness."

Inside the box were old property deeds, investment certificates, and a sealed letter.

With trembling hands, she opened the letter.

My dear Sanne, If you are reading this, it means life has tested you in ways I hoped it never would. The old family house was never the true inheritance. It was only the key.

Sanne looked up in shock.

"The key?"

The attorney nodded.

"Your parents created a private family trust more than twenty years ago."

He slid another document toward her.

Printed across the first page was a number that took her breath away.

Estimated Asset Value: €48,700,000

Nearly fifty million euros.

Apartment buildings.

Commercial properties.

Company shares.

Investment funds.

The old family house had merely protected the legal structure that held everything together.

As long as Sanne remained the rightful heir, no one else could control those assets.

Not even Daan.

Meanwhile, Daan finally reached his own lawyer in the Netherlands.

"I've found the inheritance file," he said.

There was a long pause before the lawyer replied.

"You found it?"

"Yes."

"You should prepare yourself."

"For what?"

"The Visser estate is much larger than we originally believed."

Daan frowned.

"How much larger?"

The lawyer took a deep breath.

"If the documents are authentic... your ex-wife is one of the wealthiest private heirs in the country."

Daan froze.

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

For years, he had believed Sanne was an ordinary woman with a modest inheritance.

He had walked away without a second thought.

Now he realized he had never truly known the woman he divorced.

Before he could process the news, another call came through.

It was an unknown number.

He answered.

A calm male voice spoke only one sentence.

"Mr. Van der Meer... if I were you, I would stop searching."

"Who is this?"

"You've already attracted the attention of people who have been waiting for this inheritance far longer than you."

The call disconnected.

Standing alone on a quiet street in Barcelona, Daan suddenly had the uneasy feeling that his divorce had never been the real story.

It had only been the beginning.

End of Part 4...
