200 HECTARES OF LAND AND MY BROTHER'S LIE

Nine Years of Trust… and a Secret That Was Buried

My father always said:

“Land is not just property. It is something that preserves a family’s memories and hard work.”

I have always believed those words.

After my parents passed away, my brother Alonzo and I inherited 200 hectares of farmland together. It was the same land my father had worked on for more than forty years.

On the day the will was read, Alonzo looked at me and said:

“You’ve never really liked farming, have you? Let me manage the farm. I’ll take care of the land, sell the crops, and we’ll split the profits fairly.”

I didn’t hesitate for a moment.

He was my brother.

The man who used to take me to school when I was little.

The man who always stood up for me whenever I was in trouble.

I thought I might be able to distrust everyone in this world…

but never my own family.

That was why I let Alonzo take full responsibility for the farm.

Every quarter, he transferred exactly 300 dollars to me.

Not more.

Not less.

At first, I found it strange.

I thought 200 hectares of land should have generated more income.

But every time I asked about it, Alonzo would sigh.

“You don’t know how difficult farming really is.”

“Corn yields these days are barely enough to cover the fuel, machinery maintenance, and seeds.”

“You can’t just look at the amount of land and assume we’re rich.”

I listened.

And I believed him.

For nine years.

I never checked the books.

I never asked to see the sales contracts.

I never questioned his words.

Because deep down, I always thought:

“My brother would never betray me.”

Until that one evening last month.

The province’s agricultural cooperative organized a dinner for all its members.

I actually didn’t want to go.

But a friend told me they were serving free pork, so I decided to go after all.

I sat toward the back of the room, quietly ate my meal, and listened to the conversations about the harvest.

Then the director of the cooperative stepped forward.

He was holding a piece of paper and smiling.

“Today, we would like to thank the families who achieved an exceptional harvest this year.”

Everyone began applauding.

Then he started reading out the names of the farms with the highest revenues.

One family name after another was announced.

Until…

I heard a name that made my heart race.

“Congratulations to the Alonzo family farm…”

I looked up.

Maybe I had heard it wrong.

But then the amount appeared on the screen.

$72,000.

This year alone.

My fork froze above my plate.

I stared at the screen.

$72,000?

That couldn’t be right.

For nine years, I had received only 300 dollars every quarter.

In total, less than $11,000.

So where had the rest gone?

I slowly turned my head toward Alonzo.

He was sitting several seats away.

He didn’t look surprised at all.

He didn’t look shocked.

He simply smiled softly and continued talking to the people around him as if nothing unusual had happened.

At that moment, I felt a cold sensation in my stomach.

Maybe Alonzo had never been poor.

Maybe the farm had never merely been earning enough to cover fuel and maintenance.

Maybe for all those years…

I had been the only person who didn’t know the truth.

That night, I went home without saying a word to him.

I wasn’t angry.

I didn’t cry.

I only felt an enormous emptiness.

Monday morning, I picked up my phone and called a lawyer.

“I want you to review all the financial records of the farm for the past nine years.”

He asked:

“Is there a problem?”

I looked out the window at the vast fields that had once belonged to my parents.

I replied:

“I think it’s finally time for me to know the truth.”

But what I didn’t know then…

was that this investigation would uncover a secret Alonzo had kept hidden for years.
