PART 4 — THE PLAN THEY WERE HIDING FROM ME
I sat frozen after hearing those words.
"Stay away from the house?"
My voice almost disappeared.
Laura stayed silent for a few seconds on the other end of the phone.
"I know I have no right to call you after what happened… I was part of it too."
I closed my eyes.
She was right.
She had been involved.
She had laughed while they planned to leave me behind.
But there was something in her voice that made me keep listening.
"Tell me."
Laura let out a heavy sigh.
"Megan didn't just want a vacation without you."
"She wanted you out of the house for a few days."
"Why?"
A long silence followed.
Then Laura said:
"Because she found someone who wanted to buy your house."
My entire body went cold.
"What?"
"She told the family that after Christmas, you would agree to sell."
I let out a quiet laugh.
But it wasn't a happy laugh.
It was the laugh of someone who had just realized how long they had been deceived.
"I never said I would sell my house."
"I know."
Laura's voice became softer.
"But Megan said you would listen to Connor. She said if Connor pressured you enough, you would give in."
* * *
I looked around the room.
This house.
The place where my husband and I built our life.
Every brick.
Every wall.
Every memory.
After my husband passed away, this was the one thing that still made me feel connected to him.
And Megan looked at it like it was just an asset.
Not a home.
Not a place filled with memories.
Just a number on a piece of paper.
"Laura, why are you telling me this?"
She was quiet.
Then she answered:
"Because this morning I heard Megan talking to her parents."
"What did she say?"
Laura took a deep breath.
"She said if the plan worked, you wouldn't have enough strength to fight back."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What does that mean?"
"She said after they came back from the trip, they would bring you the paperwork to sell the house."
"And if you refused..."
Laura hesitated.
"If you refused, they would tell everyone that you were no longer capable of making your own decisions."
* * *
I said nothing.
Not because I was surprised.
But because finally, every piece of the puzzle fell into place.
The little comments.
The looks.
The times Megan tried to make me question myself.
"You should rest more, Mom."
"Why do you need such a big house?"
"Maybe Connor should handle your finances."
I thought those words came from concern.
But no.
They were preparation.
They weren't trying to help me.
They were trying to take away my control.
* * *
"I'm sorry."
Laura whispered.
"I know an apology doesn't change anything."
I looked out the window.
Snow was still falling.
Softly.
Quietly.
Just like that Christmas morning.
But this time, I wasn't the woman being abandoned.
"I need you to help me with something."
Laura paused.
"What do you need?"
"I need every piece of evidence you have."
* * *
One hour later, my email was filled with files.
Group chat screenshots.
Messages.
Audio recordings.
A meeting schedule with a real estate agent.
And the thing that hurt me the most…
A draft email Megan had written to a property broker.
The subject line:
"Sell the house as soon as possible after Christmas."
I read every word slowly.
"The current owner is my mother-in-law. She is easier to convince when Connor supports me."
"We only need a few weeks to make her believe this is the best option."
"After the sale, we can use the money to buy a bigger home."
I placed my phone down.
I didn't cry.
I didn't scream.
I just felt a strange calmness.
Because when the truth becomes clear…
You no longer have to wonder if you are overreacting.
* * *
That evening, Connor came home.
He saw me sitting in the living room with a folder on the table.
"Mom..."
I looked at him.
"Do you know about Megan's plan to sell the house?"
His expression changed.
One second.
Two seconds.
Then he shook his head.
"No."
I pushed the email toward him.
"Read it."
Connor picked it up.
The more he read, the paler his face became.
"Mom… I didn't know."
I nodded.
"That's always your answer."
He looked up.
I continued:
"You didn't know Megan looked down on me."
"You didn't know she used my money."
"You didn't know she wanted this house."
I looked directly into my son's eyes.
"Connor, how many things didn't you know because you didn't want to know?"
* * *
He sat down.
Both hands covering his face.
"Why would she do this?"
I didn't answer immediately.
Because I already knew.
Greed doesn't appear overnight.
It grows every time someone benefits without consequences.
Megan didn't wake up one morning and become cruel.
She simply realized…
No one was stopping her.
* * *
Three days later, I received another phone call.
This time, it was from a lawyer.
"I have reviewed the documents you sent me, Mrs. Anderson."
"I need to inform you of something."
I stayed silent.
He continued:
"There is a power of attorney document being prepared."
"The person being named as your representative..."
He paused.
"...is your son, Connor."
My heart sank.
Because if that was true…
The person I needed to protect myself from the most…
Wasn't Megan.
It was my own son.
And I was about to discover…
Connor had been hiding a secret far bigger than anything I had ever imagined.
