PART 5 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN INSIDE THE METAL BOX
Daniel pushed me toward the back door.
“Run.”
“What about you?”
“Run!”
The door handle rattled violently.
Daniel grabbed an old shotgun from beside the fireplace.
I had never seen fear like that on a man's face.
I ran.
Outside, the rain had started again.
I crossed the field and hid behind an abandoned barn.
A gunshot echoed.
Then another.
I wanted to go back.
But Daniel had told me to run.
So I did.
I reached my car and drove until I was several miles away.
Only then did I stop.
My hands were shaking.
I called Sarah.
No answer.
I called the lawyer.
No answer.
I was completely alone again.
Except this time, I had questions that could destroy everything.
I returned home before sunrise.
The metal lunchbox sat on my kitchen table.
I stared at it.
Mrs. Rhode had told me that what she left me would change my life.
Maybe I had been looking at it the wrong way.
I opened the box again.
The key.
The envelope.
And underneath them, something I hadn't noticed before.
A false bottom.
I pried it open with a knife.
Inside was a tiny USB drive.
My heart stopped.
I plugged it into my laptop.
There was only one file.
JAMES_FINAL.mp4
I clicked it.
Mrs. Rhode appeared on screen.
She was sitting in her favorite chair.
She looked tired.
But she smiled.
“Hello, James.”
I covered my mouth.
“If you're watching this, then I'm gone.”
She paused.
“I am sorry.”
She took a breath.
“You deserve to know why I lied to you.”
She explained that my father had hidden evidence proving Marcus had stolen millions through a network of companies.
But the evidence also exposed powerful people who had protected him.
That was why my father couldn't simply go to the police.
Some of the police were involved.
Some government officials were involved.
Even the judge who sentenced him had been connected to Marcus.
Then she said something unexpected.
“The money was never stolen.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The twenty-six million dollars was money your father recovered.”
He had taken it from Marcus.
But instead of keeping it, he had moved it into a protected account.
An account that could only be accessed by me.
“Why?”
“Because the money is evidence.”
I stared at the screen.
“The serial numbers of the bills, the transaction records, the shell companies… everything was preserved.”
Then she leaned closer.
“And James, there is something else.”
Her expression changed.
“Your father is alive.”
I stopped breathing.
“He has been living under another identity for twenty years.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“He stayed hidden because Marcus believed he was dead.”
“Your father wanted to find you.”
“But every time he tried, someone stopped him.”
I whispered:
“Who?”
Mrs. Rhode answered.
“Marcus.”
Then she said the words that destroyed me.
“Your father has been watching you.”
I stared at the screen.
“For years.”
“Every Christmas.”
“Every birthday.”
“Every time you thought nobody remembered you.”
She smiled sadly.
“He remembered.”
I couldn't stop crying.
“James, he didn't leave you.”
“He was trying to survive long enough to come back.”
The video ended.
I sat in silence.
My father was alive.
And he had been watching me.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
I froze.
Three knocks.
Slow.
The same pattern Daniel had described.
I reached for the phone.
Then a voice came through the door.
“James.”
I stopped breathing.
It was an older man's voice.
Weak.
But familiar.
A voice I had heard only on that recording.
My father.
“Son…”
I couldn't move.
“Please open the door.”
I walked toward it.
My hand reached for the lock.
Then I noticed something through the window.
A black SUV.
Parked across the street.
My father whispered:
“Don't open it.”
I stopped.
“What?”
His voice came again.
“There's someone behind you.”
I turned.
A shadow moved inside my house.
Someone was standing in the hallway.
I grabbed the nearest object.
The shadow stepped forward.
And I recognized him.
The lawyer.
Mrs. Rhode's lawyer.
He was holding a gun.
“I'm sorry, James,” he said.
“But Mrs. Rhode should never have trusted you.”
