PART 3 — THE SECRET BEHIND DANIEL’S SMILE
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily standing in that locker room.
The way she pulled the towel around herself.
The way she whispered instead of speaking.
The way she looked at me like she was waiting to see if I would believe her.
And now I knew one thing.
The answer was connected to Daniel.
My brother-in-law.
The man everyone thought was perfect.
The successful businessman.
The loving father.
The husband who always brought flowers home and smiled for family photos.
But my sister’s message had changed everything.
“Please don’t look into Daniel.”
People only say things like that when they are afraid of what someone might discover.
* * *
The next morning, I woke up early.
Lily was already sitting at the kitchen table.
She looked smaller than she had the day before.
“Good morning, sweetheart.”
She smiled slightly.
“Good morning.”
I placed a plate of pancakes in front of her.
“Did you sleep okay?”
She nodded.
But then she looked toward the front door.
Like she was expecting someone.
“Are you waiting for your mom?”
Her smile disappeared.
“No.”
That one word told me everything.
A child should want their mother.
A child should feel safe hearing their parent’s name.
But Lily looked afraid.
* * *
Around ten o’clock, there was a knock at the door.
I already knew who it was.
Sarah.
When I opened the door, my sister looked exhausted.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were red.
She looked like someone who hadn’t slept in days.
“Where is Lily?”
“Inside.”
She tried to walk past me.
I stopped her.
“Not so fast.”
Her eyes met mine.
“Please.”
That word surprised me.
Sarah never begged.
Not even when we were younger.
“What is happening?”
She looked away.
“I can’t explain here.”
“You need to.”
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not embarrassment.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Daniel can’t know that Lily talked.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he will take her away.”
I stared at my sister.
“Your own husband?”
She nodded slowly.
“He has been planning it for months.”
* * *
We sat in my living room.
For the first time in years, my sister looked broken.
“I should have left him earlier.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
She looked at me.
“Daniel isn’t the man everyone thinks he is.”
I stayed silent.
She continued.
“When we got married, he was different.”
“He was kind.”
“He made me feel protected.”
“But after Lily was born, everything changed.”
“How?”
“He became controlling.”
She looked down.
“He started checking my phone.”
“Controlling our money.”
“Deciding who I could talk to.”
My hands tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was ashamed.”
Sarah wiped her tears.
“I thought people would ask why I stayed.”
* * *
Then she said something that made me freeze.
“Lily saw something she shouldn’t have seen.”
I leaned forward.
“What?”
Sarah took a deep breath.
“Three weeks ago, Daniel was in his office.”
“Lily went inside looking for her school tablet.”
“She heard him talking to someone.”
“Who?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then whispered:
“His lawyer.”
The room became silent.
“What were they discussing?”
Sarah looked toward the hallway.
At Lily.
“They were talking about removing me from my own life.”
My chest tightened.
“Explain.”
“Daniel wants full custody.”
“Why?”
“Because he found out about my inheritance.”
I frowned.
“Your inheritance?”
Sarah nodded.
“When my grandmother passed away, she left me a trust.”
“How much?”
She swallowed.
“Almost $800,000.”
I stared at her.
“And Daniel wants control of it.”
“Yes.”
* * *
Suddenly, Lily appeared at the doorway.
She was holding a small notebook.
“Auntie…”
We both turned.
She looked nervous.
“I found this.”
Sarah immediately stood up.
“Lily, no.”
But it was too late.
The notebook was already in my hand.
“Where did you get this?”
“Daddy’s office.”
Sarah’s face went pale.
“What did you see?”
Lily looked down.
“He said he was going to make mommy look crazy.”
My heart stopped.
“What else?”
She opened the notebook.
Inside were drawings.
Childlike drawings.
But one page caught my attention.
It wasn’t a drawing.
It was words.
Written in messy handwriting.
“Dad said Mommy will lose everything soon.”
Below it was another sentence.
“He said Aunt Sarah will believe she has no choice.”
I looked at my sister.
She covered her mouth.
Because she knew.
This wasn’t just about money.
Daniel wasn’t trying to protect his family.
He was trying to destroy it.
* * *
That afternoon, I decided to investigate.
I contacted an old friend who worked in financial law.
Within hours, he found something strange.
Daniel had recently opened a new account.
The account was connected to a company registered under another name.
But the address…
Was Daniel’s office.
And the money going into it?
Came from Sarah’s trust.
Someone had been moving money.
Quietly.
Carefully.
* * *
That evening, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man spoke.
“Is this Sarah’s sister?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Michael. I used to work with Daniel.”
My body became tense.
“Why are you calling me?”
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Because I think your sister and Lily are in danger.”
I stood up.
“What do you mean?”
His voice dropped.
“Daniel knows Lily talked.”
My heart stopped.
“How?”
“He checked the location history on your sister’s phone.”
Silence.
Then Michael said:
“You need to leave that house immediately.”
“Because Daniel is on his way.”
I looked toward the window.
And slowly…
A black SUV stopped in front of my driveway.
The lights turned off.
The driver’s door opened.
And Daniel stepped out.
With a smile on his face.
A smile that looked nothing like the man everyone believed he was.
