PART 4 — THE INHERITANCE ADRIAN NEVER KNEW ABOUT
I couldn't take my eyes off the document.
Victoria Whitmore.
My mother-in-law's name was printed beneath the authorization.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The room around me seemed to disappear.
All I could hear was the sound of my own breathing.
“That's impossible,” I whispered.
Sarah remained silent.
I looked at her.
“Victoria doesn't have access to my accounts.”
“Not directly.”
“Then how did she authorize this?”
Sarah opened another folder.
“We believe she had access through a company structure.”
She slid several pages toward me.
At the top was the name of a corporation I had never heard of.
Hayes Strategic Holdings.
My eyes widened.
“That's my father's company.”
Sarah nodded.
“Part of it.”
“Part?”
“Your father has several investment entities. Some are connected to government contracting. Others hold private assets.”
I stared at the documents.
“I don't understand.”
Sarah took a breath.
“Your father didn't simply give you an SUV before your wedding.”
She turned another page.
“He transferred ownership of several assets into your name.”
My mouth went dry.
“How many?”
“We're still determining the exact value.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
Sarah looked at me.
“Your estimated assets are worth considerably more than the Whitmore family business.”
I laughed nervously.
“That can't be true.”
“It is.”
I pushed the papers away.
“No. My father never told me.”
“He deliberately kept you uninformed.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted you to live a normal life.”
I looked toward the window.
A normal life.
That was exactly what I had wanted.
I had wanted a husband who loved me.
A small family.
A home.
A child.
I never cared about money.
Never cared about power.
And apparently, that made me the perfect target.
* * *
My phone suddenly rang.
Dad.
I answered.
“Dad…”
“I know.”
His voice was quiet.
“You found out.”
I looked at Sarah.
“You knew this would happen.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if I had told you everything before your marriage, you would have spent the rest of your life wondering whether Adrian loved you or your inheritance.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“And now?”
“Now you know the answer.”
I closed my eyes.
He was right.
Every expensive dinner Adrian had insisted on.
Every business trip.
Every time he asked me to sign something.
Every time Victoria told me how fortunate I was to be married into their family.
Suddenly, everything looked different.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“How much do I actually own?”
He was silent.
Then he said something I wasn't prepared to hear.
“Enough that Adrian's entire company could fit inside one of your investment portfolios.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Then why did you let me live like this?”
“Because it was your choice.”
His voice softened.
“I wanted you to discover who people were without the protection of my name.”
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“And I married the wrong person.”
“No, Emma.”
His answer came immediately.
“You trusted the wrong person.”
There was a difference.
* * *
At the Whitmore residence, Adrian was losing control.
He paced across the living room while Victoria sat on the sofa.
“Tell me exactly what you did.”
Victoria looked offended.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“The account.”
“What account?”
“Mom!”
His voice echoed through the room.
“You authorized the first transfer.”
Victoria's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
“Who told you that?”
Adrian stared at her.
“So it's true.”
Victoria stood.
“Lower your voice.”
“You used Emma's name.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You forged her authorization!”
“I did what was necessary.”
Adrian stepped backward.
“How much did you move?”
Victoria didn't answer.
“How much?”
“Four point eight million.”
His face went pale.
“That's all?”
Victoria looked away.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“What aren't you telling me?”
She remained silent.
He grabbed the edge of the table.
“Mom.”
Finally, she whispered:
“There's more.”
Adrian stared at her.
“How much?”
Victoria's lips trembled.
“Nearly twenty million.”
The room went completely silent.
Adrian sank into a chair.
Twenty million dollars.
He had spent years believing he was manipulating Emma.
But suddenly he realized something terrifying.
He had never understood what he had married into.
* * *
That night, I barely slept.
Ethan woke several times.
Each time, I picked him up and held him against my chest.
I kept thinking about the future.
About what kind of father Adrian would be.
Could I allow him to remain in Ethan's life?
Could I trust him?
Could I ever forgive him?
At 3:17 a.m., I heard a knock.
Sarah entered the room.
“I'm sorry to wake you.”
“What's happened?”
She handed me her phone.
“Your father's investigators found something.”
I looked at the screen.
There was a photograph.
A warehouse.
Then another.
A series of shipping records.
And finally, a document with Adrian's signature.
“What is this?”
Sarah sat beside me.
“Your husband has been using one of the Whitmore companies to move assets overseas.”
“Why?”
“We don't know.”
“Where?”
“Several jurisdictions.”
I stared at the records.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Three years.
My marriage had lasted four.
Which meant Adrian had apparently begun moving money almost as soon as we married.
My stomach twisted.
“Did he know about my inheritance?”
Sarah looked at me.
“We believe he knew something.”
“Something?”
“He may not have known the full value.”
I shook my head.
“My father never told me. How could Adrian know?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Because someone may have told him.”
“Who?”
She handed me another photograph.
It showed Victoria meeting a private investigator.
The date was circled.
Two months before my wedding.
I stared at it.
My wedding.
My stomach dropped.
“Victoria was investigating me before I married Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sarah's answer was quiet.
“To determine what you were worth.”
* * *
Morning came too quickly.
At 7:30, my phone began vibrating repeatedly.
Messages.
Emails.
Missed calls.
Adrian.
Dozens of them.
The first message was angry.
Where are you?
The second:
We need to talk.
Then:
Your father has no right to interfere in our marriage.
Then:
Come home immediately.
And finally:
Emma, if you don't come back, I'm going to take legal action for kidnapping my son.
I stared at that message.
My hands went cold.
Sarah immediately saw my expression.
“What did he say?”
I showed her.
She didn't panic.
Instead, she smiled faintly.
“Good.”
I looked at her.
“Good?”
“He's making threats in writing.”
She took a screenshot.
“Every message helps us.”
I looked down at Ethan.
For the first time, I understood what my father had meant when he told me not to confront Adrian.
Let him talk.
Let him threaten.
Let him expose himself.
I typed one sentence.
Then I stopped.
I looked at Sarah.
“Should I send this?”
She read it.
Then nodded.
I pressed send.
The message was simple.
You don't get to decide where my son and I live anymore.
The reply came less than ten seconds later.
Then I'll see you in court.
I stared at those words.
And instead of being afraid…
I smiled.
Because Adrian still didn't understand.
He thought he was taking me to court as a wealthy businessman defending his family.
He didn't know that my father had already assembled a legal team.
He didn't know that the banks had begun freezing suspicious accounts.
He didn't know that investigators were tracing every transaction.
And he certainly didn't know that General William Hayes had one final piece of evidence.
Evidence that had nothing to do with money.
It was a recording.
A recording made three months before my wedding.
A recording of Adrian speaking to Victoria.
And according to my father…
those few minutes of audio could prove exactly why Adrian had married me.
I looked at Sarah.
“Play it.”
She hesitated.
“Emma, are you sure?”
I looked at my sleeping son.
“Yes.”
Sarah pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Adrian's voice came through.
Clear.
Calm.
And unmistakable.
“If Emma really has access to what her father left her…”
He laughed.
“Then marrying her will be the easiest business deal I've ever made.”
My blood ran cold.
Then Victoria's voice followed.
“And if she refuses to give you control?”
Adrian answered without hesitation.
“She won't.”
A pause.
“Because once she's my wife…”
His voice became colder.
“…she'll trust me.”
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
And then Adrian said the words that destroyed the last piece of love I had ever had for him.
“By the time she realizes what I've done, it will be too late.”
I looked at Sarah.
She stopped the recording.
Neither of us spoke.
Outside the window, the sun was rising over Manhattan.
A new day had begun.
And somewhere across the city, Adrian Whitmore still believed he was in control.
He wasn't.
Not anymore.
Because now I knew the truth.
And my father wasn't going to simply take my husband to court.
He was going to make sure Adrian understood exactly what it meant to betray the daughter of General William Hayes.
