THE WEDDING DRESS FROM 1965

PART 7 — THE LAST SECRET OF THE DRESS

We locked every door.

Closed every curtain.

And called the police.

But Evelyn refused to leave her house.

“He won't hurt me,” she said.

Daniel stared at her.

“He already destroyed your life.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“He destroyed my past.”

She touched Lily's hand.

“He won't destroy her future.”

Lily looked frightened.

“Who is he?”

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

“His name is Alexander Hale.”

Daniel froze.

“Hale?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas's family?”

Evelyn nodded.

“But Alexander wasn't Thomas's son.”

“Then who was he?”

Evelyn looked toward Margaret.

“Richard's.”

Margaret's face went pale.

“So Richard had another child.”

“Yes.”

“And Alexander inherited everything?”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He stole it.”

* * *

By midnight, Daniel had uncovered dozens of hidden corporate records.

Alexander Hale had been using shell companies for decades.

He had quietly acquired portions of the Franklin empire.

Then the shocking truth appeared.

Alexander had been controlling the company from behind the scenes.

The public CEO was only a figurehead.

Daniel stared at the documents.

“He knew about the trust.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Of course.”

“Then why wait sixty years?”

“Because he needed Lily.”

“Why?”

“To force the trust open.”

Lily looked confused.

“What does he need from me?”

“Your signature.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

“The trust belongs to Lily.”

“Exactly.”

“And Alexander wants her to transfer it.”

“He can't force her.”

Evelyn's eyes darkened.

“He doesn't need to.”

Daniel understood.

“He'll threaten someone she loves.”

Lily's face went pale.

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“It's my father.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice came through.

“Daniel.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“How are you alive?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Where are you?”

“Does it matter?”

“You've been lying to me my entire life.”

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

“The truth.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“You killed people.”

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Your grandmother did.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“She killed Thomas.”

Evelyn whispered:

“No.”

Daniel's face changed.

“What did you say?”

“She was the one who poisoned him.”

Silence.

Then the call ended.

Daniel stared at his phone.

Lily looked at Evelyn.

“Did you?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“But he said…”

“He is lying.”

Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“He isn't.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Eleanor's face was devastated.

“I saw the bottle.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You never told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Eleanor looked at Lily.

“The truth is worse than you think.”

Evelyn stepped back.

“What did you see?”

Eleanor began crying.

“Thomas wasn't poisoned by Robert.”

“Then who?”

Eleanor whispered:

“I did.”

The room went silent.

Lily stood.

“Grandma?”

Eleanor covered her face.

“I didn't know it was poison.”

“What do you mean?”

“Robert gave me the bottle.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“He told me it was medicine.”

Daniel stared at Eleanor.

“You killed him accidentally.”

“No.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I gave it to him.”

“Why?”

“Because he asked me to.”

Evelyn looked confused.

“Thomas knew he was going to die.”

“What?”

“He told me Robert was coming for him.”

Eleanor's voice broke.

“He asked me to help him disappear.”

Everyone froze.

“Disappear?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor looked at Evelyn.

“Thomas wasn't dead.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“What?”

“The body buried in 1965…”

Eleanor swallowed.

“…wasn't Thomas.”

Evelyn stepped backward.

“No.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Thomas survived.”

Daniel looked horrified.

“Then who died?”

Eleanor couldn't answer.

A voice came from the hallway.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

The door opened.

An elderly man stood there.

White hair.

A walking cane.

A face older than the photograph…

but unmistakable.

Evelyn screamed.

“Thomas?”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

She collapsed into a chair.

For sixty years, everyone had believed Thomas Hale was dead.

But he had been alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

And protecting the final secret.

Daniel couldn't speak.

“You're my grandfather.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily stepped forward.

“Then why did you let everyone believe you were dead?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Because I had to protect you.”

“From Alexander?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Thomas's eyes became serious.

“Because Alexander isn't Richard's son.”

Everyone froze.

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

Then at Evelyn.

Then finally at Lily.

“He is my son.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“No…”

Thomas nodded.

“And he has spent sixty years believing that I stole his inheritance.”

Daniel whispered:

“Then the entire family war…”

Thomas looked at him.

“…was built on one final lie.”

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

On the back were three names.

Thomas. Evelyn. Richard.

But beneath them was another name.

Alexander Hale.

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Your wedding dress contains the evidence.”

Lily touched the lace.

“What evidence?”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“The proof that Alexander is not the rightful heir.”

He paused.

“And proof that the person who really owns the Franklin fortune…”

He looked directly at Lily.

“…isn't Lily.”

Everyone stared.

Thomas continued:

“The trust was changed in 1965.”

Lily's face went pale.

“Changed to whom?”

Thomas looked toward Eleanor.

And Eleanor began to cry.

“To your grandmother.”

The room fell silent.

Eleanor whispered:

“I was the true heir all along.”

Then Thomas added:

“But I never told her why.”

Lily stared at Eleanor.

“Why?”

Thomas slowly opened the final envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The name at the top was:

Eleanor Franklin Hale.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

Eleanor was never supposed to inherit the fortune.

Thomas looked at everyone.

“Because Eleanor isn't who you think she is.”

The lights suddenly went out.

And somewhere outside the house…

a car engine started.
