PART 3 — "IF SHE DOESN'T WAKE UP..."
The words hit Lorenzo harder than any bullet ever had.
"They're not sure... if she'll wake up."
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
Didn't speak.
The hallway outside Saint Mary's Charity Hospital became unnaturally still.
Every bodyguard lowered his eyes.
No one had ever seen Lorenzo De Luca afraid.
Not during assassinations.
Not during wars.
Not even when rival syndicates tried to wipe out his empire.
But now...
Standing outside an operating room...
Unable to protect the woman he had once promised to love forever...
He looked utterly helpless.
The operating room doors finally opened.
A surgeon removed his mask, exhaustion written across his face.
"Mr. De Luca."
Lorenzo crossed the hallway in three strides.
"Tell me."
"The twins are healthy."
A tiny smile appeared on the doctor's face.
"Your son weighs six pounds, four ounces."
"Your daughter weighs five pounds, eleven ounces."
"They're breathing on their own."
For the first time that night, Lorenzo closed his eyes in gratitude.
"My children..."
Then the doctor continued.
"But your wife..."
"Ex-wife," Lorenzo corrected automatically.
The doctor shook his head.
"I don't think legal paperwork matters right now."
Lorenzo fell silent.
"She lost a dangerous amount of blood."
"We've stopped the bleeding."
"But her body has endured months of stress, poor nutrition, and untreated exhaustion."
Lorenzo frowned.
"Poor nutrition?"
The doctor nodded.
"Mr. De Luca..."
"I don't know what happened between the two of you."
"But for someone carrying twins..."
"She has barely been eating."
Those words struck him like a hammer.
"Impossible."
The doctor handed him a medical chart.
"She was severely anemic."
"Vitamin deficient."
"Dehydrated."
"She delayed prenatal appointments several times."
Lorenzo stared at the report.
His voice became almost inaudible.
"Why?"
The doctor answered gently.
"She was hiding."
"Women who believe someone is hunting them often avoid hospitals."
"They're afraid their location will be discovered."
Lorenzo looked away.
She had lived six months in fear.
Not because she feared him.
Because she believed his enemies would find her through him.
Everything she had done...
She had done to protect their children.
The doctor placed a hand on Lorenzo's shoulder.
"She's alive."
"But the next twenty-four hours are critical."
"If she wakes up..."
"Her chances improve significantly."
"If she doesn't..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.

Minutes later...
A nurse carefully wheeled two transparent bassinets into the neonatal observation room.
Lorenzo stood outside the glass wall.
Inside...
Two tiny babies slept peacefully.
One wrapped in blue.
The other in pink.
They were impossibly small.
Tiny fingers.
Tiny noses.
Tiny breaths.
The nurse smiled.
"Would you like to meet them?"
Lorenzo didn't answer.
He simply nodded.
After disinfecting his hands, he stepped inside.
The nurse gently lifted the little boy first.
"Congratulations."
"He's very strong."
Lorenzo accepted him awkwardly.
His hands, capable of firing weapons without hesitation, suddenly felt too large.
Too rough.
Too dangerous.
The baby opened sleepy gray eyes.
Exactly like Isabella's.
Then...
The little boy wrapped one tiny hand around Lorenzo's finger.
Lorenzo froze.
He had negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking.
Ordered executions with a single sentence.
Yet one tiny hand completely destroyed every wall around his heart.
"He knows you," the nurse whispered.
Lorenzo shook his head.
"No."
The nurse smiled.
"Babies know more than adults think."
Lorenzo couldn't stop staring.
"My son..."
His voice broke.
He had missed every ultrasound.
Every heartbeat.
Every kick.
Every month of the pregnancy.
Because Isabella had disappeared.
Because he had failed to find her.
A second nurse approached carrying the little girl.
"This one's quieter."
She carefully placed the baby into his other arm.
The tiny girl immediately yawned.
Then rested her cheek against his chest.
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
His daughter listened to his heartbeat.
As though she had known it forever.
Tears slowly filled his eyes.
No one in the room dared acknowledge them.
The King of the Underworld...
Was crying.

Across town...
Deep beneath Lorenzo's headquarters...
Marco Bellini sat chained inside a concrete interrogation chamber.
No windows.
No clock.
No idea whether it was day or night.
A steel door opened.
Lorenzo entered alone.
He carried no weapon.
Only two photographs.
He placed them on the table.
Marco glanced down.
A newborn boy.
A newborn girl.
"So..."
Marco forced a smile.
"They survived."
Lorenzo remained silent.
Marco laughed bitterly.
"They'll become targets."
"They already are."
Lorenzo slowly sat across from him.
"You said there were five members of the Black Council."
Marco nodded.
"There are."
"I want names."
Marco looked away.
"I can't."
"You can."
"They'll kill everyone I love."
Lorenzo leaned forward.
"They already planned to."
Marco looked confused.
Lorenzo tossed another file onto the table.
Financial records.
Wire transfers.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
Marco's expression collapsed.
"No..."
"They lied to you."
Lorenzo spoke quietly.
"Your wife disappeared three months ago."
Marco's breathing stopped.
"Your eldest son has been hiding in Spain under a false identity."
"Your youngest daughter was moved yesterday."
Marco shook violently.
"No..."
"They promised they'd protect them."
Lorenzo's voice hardened.
"You were never their partner."
"You were disposable."
Marco's eyes filled with despair.
"They..."
"They betrayed me?"
"They've been stealing from both of us for years."
Lorenzo slid one final document across the table.
An offshore banking statement.
The amount made Marco's face turn white.
Two point three billion dollars.
Transferred over nine years.
Hidden.
Untouched.
"The Black Council has been building its own empire."
Marco stared blankly.
"We were all fools."
Lorenzo waited.
Finally...
Marco whispered,
"I'll tell you everything."

At the hospital...
A young nurse entered Isabella's room to adjust her IV.
She noticed something strange.
The heart monitor had changed rhythm.
Not dangerously.
Almost...
Excited.
The nurse looked toward the bed.
Isabella's fingers had moved.
Very slightly.
The nurse leaned closer.
"Mrs. Rossi?"
Nothing.
Then...
Another tiny movement.
The nurse pressed the emergency call button.
Doctors rushed into the room.
Outside...
Lorenzo was halfway through questioning Marco when his secure phone vibrated.
Matteo's name flashed across the screen.
He answered immediately.
"What is it?"
Matteo sounded breathless.
"Boss..."
"Isabella just moved."
Lorenzo was already standing.
"Is she awake?"
"Not yet."
"But..."
"The doctors say she may be hearing voices."
Without another word, Lorenzo ran.
The drive back to the hospital took less than six minutes.
He ignored every security protocol.
Ignored every person trying to stop him.
When he entered Isabella's room...
She still hadn't opened her eyes.
Machines beeped steadily around her.
A doctor stepped aside.
"Talk to her."
Lorenzo frowned.
"What?"
"Patients sometimes respond to familiar voices."
He slowly approached the bed.
She looked so fragile.
Nothing like the fearless woman who had once challenged him in every argument.
He gently took her hand.
Still warm.
Still alive.
He leaned close to her ear.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Isabella..."
"You won."
"I found you."
"You don't have to run anymore."
A single tear escaped from the corner of her closed eye.
The nurse gasped.
Lorenzo froze.
Then...
Very slowly...
Isabella's lips moved.
Only two faint words escaped.
"...They're here?"
Lorenzo smiled through tears.
"Yes."
"Our son."
"Our daughter."
"They're waiting for you."
Another long silence filled the room.
Then Isabella whispered something that made every doctor stop moving.
"Don't..."
"...let them take the babies."
Lorenzo's expression instantly changed.
"They?"
Isabella struggled to form another sentence.
Her eyes remained closed.
But she managed to whisper one final warning.
"They already..."
"...have someone..."
"...inside the hospital."
