PART 6 — The Truth Victoria Was Willing to Kill For
We returned to the Sterling mansion within minutes.
Police had already arrived.
Michael stood outside, pale and shaken.
The other four children were inside with officers.
But Emma was gone.
I ran through the front door.
“Where is she?”
Michael pointed toward the back garden.
“They found her shoe.”
I froze.
A tiny pink shoe lay beside the fountain.
I picked it up.
My hands began shaking.
Julian stood behind me.
“Genevieve…”
I turned.
“This is your fault.”
He looked stunned.
“You're right.”
“I brought them here because I thought the truth was safe.”
“I'll find her.”
“You better.”
An officer approached.
“We found tire tracks.”
“Where?”
“Behind the eastern gate.”
Julian immediately grabbed his keys.
“I know where that road leads.”
I followed him.
“Where?”
“To an old Sterling property.”
The same address the receptionist had given us.
Daniel Sterling.
Julian drove like a man who had finally discovered something worth dying for.
We arrived at an abandoned farmhouse outside Atlanta.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, we found Emma's backpack.
I nearly collapsed.
“Emma!”
No answer.
Then a voice came from upstairs.
“She's safe.”
I froze.
Julian stepped in front of me.
“Show yourself.”
A man appeared on the staircase.
Older.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
Julian stared.
The man stared back.
“You're Daniel.”
The man nodded.
“I've been waiting for you.”
I stepped forward.
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe.”
“Bring her to me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.”
I wanted to attack him.
Julian grabbed my arm.
“Why did you take her?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because Victoria is coming.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
“She doesn't know I'm here.”
“Then why take Emma?”
“Because Emma is the reason she altered the records.”
Daniel walked down the stairs.
“She didn't want the Sterling family to know that my son existed.”
I stared at him.
“Your son?”
He looked at me.
“Emma.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He reached into his pocket and removed an old photograph.
A newborn baby.
A bracelet around the tiny wrist.
The name was written clearly.
Emma Reed.
I stared.
Daniel continued.
“Her biological father was my son, Matthew.”
Julian looked confused.
“Your son?”
Daniel nodded.
“My son died before Emma was born.”
“And Victoria?”
“She knew.”
He looked at me.
“She knew Emma was Matthew's daughter.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Why would she care?”
“Because Matthew was the rightful heir to Harrison's private estate.”
Julian's eyes widened.
“My father left an inheritance?”
“Not to you.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“To Emma.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“Your father discovered that Matthew had a daughter shortly before his death,” Daniel continued.
“He planned to change his will.”
Julian whispered:
“So Victoria switched the babies.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make sure Emma would never be found.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Then why did she leave Emma with me?”
“Because she thought you would disappear.”
I understood.
Victoria hadn't simply wanted my marriage.
She had wanted the child erased.
She had used my divorce to remove me from the Sterling family.
And then she had manipulated the hospital records so nobody would ever search for Emma.
My daughter wasn't just a secret.
She was evidence.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“She found us.”
Julian moved toward the door.
“Victoria?”
Daniel nodded.
A car stopped outside.
Victoria stepped out.
But she wasn't alone.
Two men followed her.
Julian whispered:
“She came prepared.”
I pulled out my phone.
“Police are on the way.”
Victoria smiled through the window.
“You always were predictable, Genevieve.”
I stepped outside.
“Where is Emma?”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“Inside.”
“Let her go.”
“She was never yours.”
“She is my daughter.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No. She belongs to the Sterling family.”
Julian stepped forward.
“You stole her.”
“I protected this family.”
“You destroyed it.”
She looked at him.
“I gave you everything you wanted.”
“You gave me a lie.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.”
“You loved what you thought you could own.”
Victoria suddenly pulled a folder from her coat.
“You want proof?”
She threw it onto the ground.
Medical records.
Hospital photographs.
Original birth documents.
Everything.
I picked them up.
And there it was.
The truth.
Emma was not Julian's biological daughter.
But she was connected to the Sterling family.
Her father was Matthew Sterling.
Harrison's secret grandson.
And Harrison had left Emma an inheritance worth millions.
Victoria had spent ten years hiding it.
I looked at her.
“You did all this for money.”
She laughed bitterly.
“No.”
She looked at Julian.
“I did it because I knew what would happen if the truth came out.”
“What?”
“You would lose everything.”
Julian frowned.
“Why?”
Victoria looked toward the house.
“Because Harrison didn't just leave money to Emma.”
She paused.
“He left her the Sterling company.”
Julian went silent.
I felt the weight of the documents in my hands.
Then a child's voice came from upstairs.
“Mom?”
I looked up.
Emma stood at the top of the staircase.
Alive.
Safe.
Crying.
I ran toward her.
She threw herself into my arms.
I held her so tightly she could barely breathe.
“I've got you.”
Julian stood below us, tears running down his face.
Victoria watched silently.
Then police sirens approached.
Officers rushed into the farmhouse.
Victoria was arrested.
But before they took her away, she looked directly at Julian.
“You still don't know the worst part.”
Julian stared at her.
“What now?”
She smiled.
“Harrison didn't leave the company to Emma because he loved her.”
She looked at me.
“He left it to her because he knew what Genevieve would discover when she inherited it.”
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria's smile widened.
“The Sterling company is bankrupt.”
Julian's face changed.
“That's impossible.”
Victoria laughed.
“And your father wasn't murdered by illness.”
The police officer pulled her away.
I stood frozen.
Julian looked at me.
“What did she mean?”
I looked down at the documents.
Then at Emma.
Then at the mansion in the distance.
For ten years, I thought my greatest tragedy had been losing my husband.
I was wrong.
Because the moment I inherited the Sterling empire…
I also inherited the secret that could destroy everyone who built it.
PART 7 — The Empire Built on a Lie
Three days after Victoria's arrest, the Sterling mansion was surrounded by lawyers, investigators and reporters.
The funeral was forgotten.
The divorce was forgotten.
Everyone wanted to know one thing.
Why had Harrison Sterling left his entire company to a child nobody knew existed?
The answer was sitting in front of me.
A black folder.
My name was written across it.
I opened it in Harrison's study.
Julian stood beside me.
The four children were upstairs with Michael.
Emma sat quietly in the corner, holding a stuffed rabbit.
I turned the first page.
Financial statements.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Millions of dollars moving overseas.
Julian frowned.
“What is this?”
“Your father's company.”
He looked closer.
Then his face went pale.
“That's impossible.”
“It isn't.”
Harrison had been investigating his own company for years.
Someone had been stealing from Sterling Holdings.
Not thousands.
Not millions.
Hundreds of millions.
And the final page contained one name.
Victoria Hayes.
But beneath it were three others.
Eleanor Sterling.
Michael Sterling.
And…
Julian.
I stared at the page.
“No.”
Julian looked horrified.
“I didn't know.”
“I believe you.”
He looked at me.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your signature was forged.”
He picked up the document.
“Then who did it?”
I turned the page.
A handwritten note from Harrison waited underneath.
Julian, if Genevieve ever finds this, trust her.
Julian stared at the words.
His father's final instruction was clear.
The person who destroyed your marriage is not the person who planned it.
I looked at Julian.
“What does that mean?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Then someone knocked.
Michael entered.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“The police found Victoria's phone.”
“And?”
“They recovered deleted messages.”
Julian stood.
“From whom?”
Michael looked at me.
“Your mother.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor.
The woman who had helped destroy my marriage.
The woman who had intercepted my letters.
The woman who had lied about my pregnancy.
But Harrison's note said Victoria hadn't planned everything.
Julian grabbed the phone.
“What did they find?”
Michael handed it to him.
There were hundreds of messages.
Some dated ten years ago.
Others from only weeks earlier.
The final message had been sent the day before Harrison's funeral.
He knows.
Victoria had replied:
Then make sure Genevieve never reaches the house.
Julian stared.
“Who knows?”
Michael shook his head.
“I don't know.”
I took the phone.
Another message appeared.
From Eleanor.
If Harrison left the company to the child, we're finished.
My stomach tightened.
“Why would your mother be afraid of Emma?”
Julian didn't answer.
Because he was beginning to understand.
Emma wasn't merely an heir.
She was a threat.
To everything the Sterling family had built.
Suddenly, the study door opened.
Eleanor stood there.
She looked exhausted.
“Genevieve.”
I faced her.
“You knew.”
She began crying.
“Yes.”
Julian stepped toward her.
“How much?”
“Everything.”
His voice became cold.
“You knew about the children?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Genevieve was innocent?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Victoria switched the hospital records?”
Eleanor nodded.
Julian looked like someone had stabbed him.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because I thought I was saving you.”
“From what?”
“From your father.”
I frowned.
“What did Harrison do?”
Eleanor looked at me.
“He wasn't the man you thought he was.”
She sat down.
“Your father built Sterling Holdings through illegal acquisitions. He threatened competitors. He destroyed people who stood in his way.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“He also had another secret.”
Eleanor looked toward Emma.
“Matthew wasn't his son.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
“Matthew was my son.”
I stared.
“Then why was he called Harrison's?”
Eleanor looked down.
“Because Harrison adopted him.”
“Why?”
“Because Matthew knew too much.”
The room became silent.
Eleanor continued.
“Matthew discovered the financial fraud.”
Julian whispered:
“And that's why he died.”
She nodded.
“Your father made it look like an accident.”
I felt sick.
“And Emma?”
“Emma inherited everything Matthew would have inherited.”
Julian looked at me.
“So Harrison left the company to her because…”
“Because he wanted the truth exposed.”
I stared at the documents.
Harrison hadn't been protecting the Sterling family.
He had been trying to destroy the corruption he helped create.
Then Eleanor said something that changed everything.
“Genevieve…”
I looked at her.
“There is one more document.”
“Where?”
“Under Harrison's grave.”
Julian's eyes widened.
“What?”
Eleanor whispered:
“He didn't trust anyone with it.”
I looked toward the window.
Outside, the cemetery was visible beyond the trees.
The same cemetery where I had arrived three days earlier with five children.
The same place where my past had returned.
I closed the folder.
“Let's go.”
Julian nodded.
We walked outside together.
For the first time in ten years, he wasn't walking ahead of me.
He was beside me.
At the cemetery, we reached Harrison's grave.
The ground near the headstone had already been disturbed.
Someone had been there before us.
Julian knelt.
“There.”
A small metal box was buried beneath the stone.
He pulled it out.
Inside was a key.
And a single piece of paper.
I unfolded it.
Only six words were written.
“The real owner is still alive.”
Julian looked at me.
“Who?”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
The caller ID was unknown.
I answered.
A man's voice said:
“Genevieve Vance?”
“Yes.”
“You've been searching for the wrong person.”
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Matthew Sterling.”
I couldn't breathe.
Julian dropped the key.
Because Matthew Sterling was supposed to have died before Emma was born.
And yet the man on the phone had just said:
“I'm Emma's father.”
