PART 5 — THE GIRL THEY HID

I couldn't look away from the photograph.

The little girl stood beside Elena, holding her hand.

She had dark hair.

Brown eyes.

And the same small dimple that appeared whenever Rachel smiled.

Daniel stared at the screen as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

“That can't be Rachel's daughter.”

I looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because Rachel told me she couldn't have children.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Before we got married.”

He shook his head.

“She said she'd had surgery.”

I looked again at the photograph.

The girl couldn't have been more than six.

Exactly the right age.

Exactly the right timeline.

Then another thought hit me.

“The twins are five.”

Daniel slowly looked at me.

“And the girl is six.”

Neither of us spoke.

Three children.

Two boys.

One girl.

All connected to the same people.

All hidden behind lies.

I called the police.

This time, I didn't care who might be watching.

Within an hour, investigators were at my house.

We gave them everything.

The flash drive.

The photographs.

The financial records.

The messages.

And the address of the abandoned research center.

But there was one problem.

By the time police arrived at the building, Victor and Rachel were gone.

The files were gone too.

Someone had erased the security footage.

The only thing left behind was a small metal box.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

I picked it up.

The name written on it was:

LILY MARSH.

Daniel stared at it.

“That's the girl's name.”

I nodded.

Then the officer handed me another item.

A photograph.

It showed Elena holding newborn twins.

And beside her stood Rachel.

But Rachel wasn't smiling.

She looked terrified.

On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words:

“She took them from me.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Your ex-wife stole the twins.”

He closed his eyes.

“And Elena has been trying to get them back.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Rachel hadn't simply wanted custody.

She had been hiding the truth about the children's biological mother.

She had used Victor to destroy Daniel financially.

She had convinced the court that Daniel was unstable.

She had controlled the records.

And all because the truth about the twins could expose something much bigger.

But one question remained.

Where was Elena?

And where was Lily?

* * *

Three days passed.

No one heard from Rachel.

No one heard from Victor.

Then, at 2:13 a.m., my phone rang.

I answered immediately.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Are the boys safe?”

My heart jumped.

“Elena?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because they found me once.”

“Who?”

She was silent.

Then:

“People who don't want the children identified.”

“Why are the children so important?”

Her breathing became uneven.

“Because they weren't supposed to exist.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

“The clinic was conducting illegal genetic research.”

Daniel stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

Elena continued:

“They were testing embryos using DNA from wealthy families.”

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

“Because they wanted to create children with specific genetic traits.”

Daniel looked horrified.

“And the twins?”

“They were part of the program.”

“Were they born there?”

“Yes.”

“Who are their biological parents?”

Elena was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel is their father.”

My son closed his eyes.

“And you?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

Tears filled his eyes.

Elena continued:

“Rachel was never their biological mother.”

Daniel's face crumpled.

“Why did she take them?”

“Because she was working with Victor.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Silence.

Then Elena said:

“They promised her millions.”

I felt sick.

“What about Lily?”

Elena's voice became softer.

“Lily was different.”

“How?”

“She wasn't part of the original experiment.”

“Then whose child is she?”

Elena hesitated.

“She was mine.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“Then why did you hide her?”

“Because she was the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Elena whispered:

“She proved who created the program.”

Before I could ask anything else, the line suddenly went silent.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

“Elena?”

The call had ended.

Then my phone received a message.

An address.

Nothing else.

We drove there with police.

It was an old farmhouse outside the city.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was abandoned.

A blanket lay on the floor.

A child's shoe rested beside it.

And on the kitchen table was a photograph.

Elena.

Rachel.

Victor.

And three children.

The twins.

And Lily.

Someone had written beneath them:

“THE FAMILY THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST.”

Daniel picked up the photograph.

Then he noticed something behind it.

A second photograph.

He turned it over.

His face went completely white.

It showed Lily standing beside a man.

Daniel stared at him.

“Dad…”

I looked at the photograph.

The man standing beside Lily was someone I recognized.

Someone I had known for more than twenty years.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had attended every important event in our family.

My own brother.

Daniel's uncle.

I couldn't speak.

Then footsteps sounded outside.

The police immediately drew their weapons.

Someone was approaching the house.

Slowly.

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Elena.

She looked exhausted.

But she was alive.

Daniel ran toward her.

For a moment, mother and son simply held each other.

Then Elena looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I shook my head.

“Tell me the truth.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

She looked toward the photograph.

“But you need to understand something first.”

“What?”

She glanced toward the window.

“They didn't just steal the children.”

My heart sank.

“What did they do?”

Elena whispered:

“They changed their identities.”

“For what?”

“To hide who their real father was.”

Daniel frowned.

“I thought you said I was their father.”

“You are.”

“Then what are they hiding?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“The children were created from your DNA.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“But your DNA was used too.”

Elena nodded.

“So?”

She took a trembling breath.

“You aren't their only biological father.”

Silence.

I felt the world tilt beneath my feet.

“What does that mean?”

Elena looked at me.

“The twins have another genetic father.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then pointed toward the photograph.

Toward the man standing beside Lily.

My brother.

The police immediately surrounded the house.

But before anyone could move, Elena whispered:

“He isn't the mastermind.”

“Then who is?”

She looked at me.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The person who started all of this…”

She paused.

“…is someone you have been protecting your entire life.”

I stared at her.

“Who?”

Elena didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the doorway.

Someone had appeared behind the police.

A man in a dark coat.

He smiled when he saw me.

And I recognized him immediately.

My own father.

The man I had buried twelve years ago.

He was alive.

And he had been watching my family all along.
