The Son They Never Had

Meanwhile...

Our plane had landed in Zurich.

My daughters pressed their faces against the airport windows, watching planes taxi beneath the gray afternoon sky.

"Mama," eight-year-old Lily asked softly.

"Are we really never going back?"

I knelt beside her.

"No."

"What about Daddy?"

There it was.

The question every child eventually asks.

I brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Sometimes adults make choices that children don't understand."

"Did Daddy stop loving us?"

My heart cracked.

I refused to let my pain become theirs.

"No," I answered carefully.

"Then why didn't he want us?"

I couldn't lie forever.

But today wasn't the day to tell them that their father had called them baggage.

So I smiled.

"Because some people spend their whole lives chasing what they don't have..."

"...and forget the treasure already in their hands."

Lily nodded slowly.

She didn't fully understand.

Not yet.

My younger daughter, Emma, slipped her tiny hand into mine.

"I like it here already."

I laughed through the ache in my chest.

"So do I."

Outside the terminal, a black SUV was waiting.

The driver stepped forward immediately.

"Welcome back, Miss Henderson."

The girls looked at me with surprise.

"You know him?"

"I've known him a very long time."

He opened the door.

"Mr. Whitmore is waiting."

Emma whispered, "Who's Mr. Whitmore?"

I looked out toward the snow-covered mountains in the distance.

"My father."

Both girls froze.

"Grandpa?"

I smiled.

"Yes."

The grandfather they had never met.
