PART 5 — THE MAN WHO WAS REALLY MY FATHER
For a moment, I couldn't understand what my mother had just said.
My eyes moved from her to the wounded man on the floor.
My father.
Or at least, the man I had spent my entire life calling Dad.
“What did you say?”
My mother was crying.
“Your father isn't the man you think he is.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Enough.”
My mother turned toward him.
“No. It has gone too far.”
She looked at me.
“Evelyn discovered the truth years ago.”
“What truth?”
“That the man who raised you wasn't your biological father.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Then who is?”
My mother didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the shoebox.
“Evelyn left the answer inside.”
I opened it again with trembling hands.
Beneath the photographs was a small sealed envelope I hadn't noticed before.
My name was written on it.
But the handwriting wasn't Evelyn's.
It was my mother's.
I tore it open.
Inside was a single photograph.
A young man stood beside my mother.
I had never seen him before.
But something about his face felt familiar.
On the back were four words:
“Your real father, Daniel.”
I stared at the photograph.
Then at my mother.
“Who is he?”
She whispered his name.
“Thomas Whitmore.”
Richard suddenly went pale.
My mother continued.
“He was Evelyn's first husband's younger brother.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Richard.
“You knew him.”
Richard said nothing.
My mother nodded.
“Thomas discovered what Richard was doing with the money.”
“And?”
“Richard killed him.”
I looked at the man who had spent years pretending to be my father's friend.
“You killed my father?”
Richard raised his weapon.
“He should have stayed quiet.”
My mother stepped between us.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
I could barely hear her.
“Evelyn knew Thomas was your father. She spent years protecting you.”
“Then why did she marry me?”
“Because Richard had started looking for you.”
I looked down at the box.
“She knew I would eventually find everything.”
My mother nodded.
“She wanted you to have the choice she never had.”
“What choice?”
“To walk away.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Walk away from what?”
She looked at the documents.
“Thirty million dollars.”
I froze.
“The money?”
“It's yours.”
Richard suddenly lunged forward.
My father shouted from the floor:
“RUN!”
A gunshot shattered the warehouse.
I grabbed the box.
My mother pushed me toward the exit.
“Go!”
“What about you?”
“Go, Daniel!”
I ran.
Behind me, I heard another gunshot.
Then silence.
* * *
I didn't stop until I reached the road.
My hands were shaking.
I called the police.
Then I called the lawyer.
“Everything was true,” I whispered.
“What happened?”
“My father is alive.”
Silence.
“Daniel…”
“And Evelyn was murdered.”
The lawyer's voice became serious.
“Where are you?”
I told him.
Then I opened the box again.
There was one final envelope.
This time, the words on the front were unmistakable.
OPEN ONLY AFTER YOU KNOW WHO YOUR FATHER IS.
My heart pounded.
I opened it.
Inside was Evelyn's final letter.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then you've finally discovered the truth.
I didn't marry you for money.
I married you because you were the last thing Thomas left behind.
I stopped reading.
Thomas.
My real father.
Evelyn had known him.
Loved him.
Protected his son.
The letter continued.
There is something I never told you.
Thomas didn't die because of the money.
My hands began trembling.
He died because he discovered what Richard was planning.
I read the next sentence.
Then froze.
The thirty million dollars was never Richard's.
It belonged to you.
I stared at the page.
There was another line.
But the money is only the beginning.
I turned the page.
Nothing.
The rest had been torn away.
I looked at the lawyer.
“What does this mean?”
He stared at the letter.
“I don't know.”
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Daniel…”
My blood ran cold.
It was my mother.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Listen carefully.”
Her breathing was uneven.
“Don't go home.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard wasn't working alone.”
I froze.
“Who was helping him?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Evelyn's lawyer.”
I slowly looked at the lawyer standing beside me.
His face was expressionless.
My mother continued:
“He was the one who helped arrange Evelyn's death.”
The call suddenly ended.
I stared at the lawyer.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Then he slowly smiled.
“Your mother always was a very convincing liar.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did you say?”
He reached inside his jacket.
But instead of a weapon, he pulled out a second photograph.
He placed it on the table.
It showed Evelyn.
My mother.
Richard.
And the lawyer.
Standing together.
Twenty years earlier.
I looked at the date.
My hands went numb.
Because Evelyn had supposedly met the lawyer…
only three years ago.
I looked up.
“Who are you?”
The lawyer's smile disappeared.
Then he said something that made my entire body freeze.
“I'm the reason Evelyn married you.”
He placed another document in front of me.
It contained a DNA test.
My name.
Thomas Whitmore's name.
And one shocking result.
99.98% probability of biological relationship.
I stared at it.
Then he whispered:
“But Thomas wasn't your only father.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
He leaned closer.
“Your mother gave birth to twins.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You weren't the only child.”
He pointed to the final photograph.
A baby.
Another baby.
And beneath it, a name I had never heard before.
Daniel Whitmore — Baby A.
Then:
Baby B — Missing.
I stared at the photograph.
The lawyer stood.
“Evelyn spent her entire life searching for your twin.”
My hands began to shake.
“Where is he?”
The lawyer looked toward the door.
Then quietly answered:
“He's been living under your name for the last fifteen years.”
