PART 5 — THE BABY WHO WASN’T NORA
The lights went out.
For three seconds, the entire cabin disappeared into darkness.
Then Nora began crying.
Henry's heart pounded.
He held her tighter.
“She's mine.”
His voice shook.
“I don't care what you say. She's my daughter.”
Edward's voice came through the speakers.
“Then prove it.”
Emergency lights flickered on.
Henry looked at Nora's face.
The tiny nose.
The dark hair.
The little fingers gripping his shirt.
Everything about her felt familiar.
Everything about her felt like Claire.
But now doubt had entered his mind.
And doubt was more terrifying than any weapon.
Mason stepped closer.
“Henry, don't listen to him.”
Edward laughed.
“You always were protective of your brother, Ethan.”
Mason froze.
Henry looked at him.
“Brother?”
Edward continued.
“Did you really think Ethan was my only secret?”
Henry's blood ran cold.
Mason's expression changed.
“What are you talking about?”
“You'll find out soon enough.”
Then the speakers went silent.
Henry looked toward the cockpit.
“We need to get control of this plane.”
Mason nodded.
But before either of them could move, Margaret stepped forward.
“There is another way.”
Henry stared at her.
“What?”
“Your father's plan depends on you being afraid.”
She reached into her uniform and pulled out a small phone.
“Claire gave me this.”
Henry stared.
“She trusted you?”
Margaret nodded.
“She knew I had helped Edward once.”
Henry's expression hardened.
“You helped him take my son.”
“Yes.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“And I've spent six years trying to undo what I did.”
She pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
Claire's voice filled the cabin.
Henry stopped breathing.
“Henry, if you're hearing this, I'm probably gone.”
His eyes immediately filled with tears.
Claire continued.
“I know you will be angry. You have every right to be.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“But please listen until the end.”
A pause.
“The baby you're holding is Nora.”
Henry opened his eyes.
Margaret looked at him.
Claire continued.
“Edward will tell you that she isn't your daughter. He will make you question everything.”
Henry's breathing steadied.
“But don't let him.”
Mason whispered:
“She knew.”
Claire's voice became softer.
“Nora is our daughter. I held her the moment she was born. I know her.”
Henry looked down at the baby.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
Claire continued:
“But there is something else you must know.”
The recording crackled.
“The baby who disappeared six years ago was not taken because he was weak.”
Henry looked at Mason.
“He was taken because Edward discovered that Ethan had inherited something from me.”
Mason's face went pale.
“Something that could expose him.”
Claire continued.
“Ethan is not just your son.”
Henry stared at Mason.
“He is the legal heir to everything Edward built.”
Silence.
Mason's eyes widened.
Claire's final words came slowly.
“Henry, protect both of our children.”
The recording ended.
Henry stood frozen.
Then Nora stopped crying.
She opened her eyes.
Henry kissed her forehead.
“I believe you.”
Mason looked at him.
“You believe Claire?”
“I always should have.”
Suddenly, the aircraft shook violently.
A warning alarm began screaming.
The captain announced an emergency landing.
Henry looked toward the cockpit.
Edward's voice returned one final time.
“You still don't understand.”
The plane began descending.
“Your wife wasn't my enemy.”
Henry's eyes narrowed.
“She was my daughter.”
Henry froze.
“What?”
Edward continued.
“Claire was never who you thought she was.”
The transmission cut.
Henry looked at Mason.
Neither spoke.
Then Mason noticed something inside the memory card.
A hidden file had appeared.
He opened it.
A video began playing.
Claire was sitting in a dark room.
Her face was bruised.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Henry…”
She whispered.
“If you're watching this, there's no time left.”
Henry moved closer.
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Your father isn't the only person behind this.”
Henry's face changed.
“There is someone you trust more than anyone.”
Claire looked terrified.
“Someone who has been beside you since the day Nora was born.”
The video suddenly froze.
A shadow appeared behind Claire.
Someone entered the room.
Claire turned.
Her eyes widened.
The screen went black.
Henry stared at the frozen image.
Mason whispered:
“Who was behind her?”
Henry didn't answer.
Because he had already recognized the silhouette.
It was someone he knew.
Someone who was sitting on this very airplane.
And then, from behind them, a quiet voice spoke.
“Henry…”
He turned.
The flight attendant was standing there.
Her face was covered in tears.
“I need to tell you the truth.”
She looked at Nora.
Then at Mason.
And whispered:
“Claire is still alive.”
