PART 1
I LEFT MY WIFE BECAUSE I THOUGHT I NEVER WANTED CHILDREN... FOUR YEARS LATER, SHE RETURNED AS THE NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF MY COMPANY—WITH TRIPLETS WHO LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE ME... AND I HAD NO IDEA THEY WERE MY CHILDREN.
That rainy night changed everything.
I, Lucas Hart, CEO of the Hart Group, had been set up by a business rival during a banquet. Drugged and barely conscious, I stumbled into the wrong hotel room...
The next morning, the woman beside me was gone.
All she left behind was a handwritten note:
"Please pretend this was just an accident."
For years, I searched for her.
I never found her.
Eventually, I buried that night deep in my memories.
Four years later...
The Hart Group announced its new Vice President, a brilliant executive returning from Europe.
When she walked into the boardroom, my heart skipped a beat.
Sophia Bennett.
She looked familiar.
Too familiar.
But she looked at me like we had never met.
After work, I happened to see her at a nearby park...
With three four-year-old children.
Triplets.
Two boys.
One girl.
The moment I looked into their faces...
I froze.
Their eyes.
Their smiles.
Even the little boy's habit of rubbing the back of his neck whenever he was nervous...
They were exactly like mine.
Before I could say a word, Sophia gently gathered the children and walked away.
From that day on, I couldn't stop investigating.
Every clue led to one impossible conclusion...
Until the DNA report finally confirmed it.
They were my children.
When I rushed to find Sophia, expecting tears or forgiveness, she calmly looked me in the eyes and said,
"You're four years too late."
Just then, one of the triplets ran into the room, hugged another man, and shouted,
"Daddy!"
My entire world collapsed.
The word echoed inside my head.
"Daddy."
I stood there frozen, unable to breathe.
The man holding my son looked up.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
He was younger than me, dressed casually, with a warm smile that seemed to come naturally. The kind of smile that made children feel safe. The kind of smile I had spent years convincing myself I didn't need to have.
Then I looked down at the little boy wrapped around his legs.
My son.
My child.
A child who had my eyes.
My stubborn expression.
My nervous habit.
But he was calling another man "Daddy."
Something inside my chest cracked.
Sophia noticed my expression.
She didn't look surprised.
She didn't look guilty.
She simply looked tired.
"Lucas," she said quietly.
Hearing my name from her lips after four years felt strange.
Like hearing a song I had forgotten but somehow still remembered every word to.
I swallowed hard.
"Who is he?"
Sophia glanced at the man, then at the three children standing nearby.
"This is Daniel."
Daniel extended his hand.
"Nice to meet you."
I stared at his hand.
I couldn't move.
Nice to meet you?
How could he say that?
He was standing in front of the children I had never known existed.
The children I had missed their first steps.
Their first words.
Their first birthdays.
The nights they cried.
The mornings they woke up scared.
Four years.
Four years of moments I could never get back.
Finally, I forced myself to speak.
"Why does he call you Daddy?"
The room became silent.
Sophia's expression changed slightly.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"Because Daniel has been there," she replied.
Her words hit harder than any accusation.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn't look proud.
He didn't look like he was trying to replace me.
He looked... guilty.
And somehow that hurt even more.
"Tell him," Sophia said.
Daniel looked at her.
"Sophia..."
"No."
Her voice was calm but firm.
"He deserves to know."
My heart raced.
"Know what?"
Sophia took a deep breath.
Then she walked toward the window.
Outside, the rain poured against the glass.
Just like that night four years ago.
The same rain.
The same sound.
The same feeling that something important was slipping away from me.
"After that night at the hotel," she began, "I found out I was pregnant."
My entire body went cold.
I already knew the answer.
But I needed to hear it.
"I took three tests," she continued. "Then I went to the doctor."
Her fingers tightened.
"They told me I wasn't having one baby."
She looked back at me.
"I was having three."
A silence followed.
Three.
The number felt impossible.
Three children.
Three lives.
Three pieces of me growing inside her while I was somewhere else, building my empire and convincing myself that leaving her had been the right decision.
"I tried to find you," Sophia said.
I looked up sharply.
"You did?"
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
"Of course I did."
She walked closer.
"I didn't know your full situation. I only knew your name. Lucas Hart. The man everyone said owned half the city."
Her eyes became colder.
"I called your company. I sent messages. I even went to your headquarters."
My heart sank.
"I never received anything."
"I know."
The way she said it made me understand.
Someone had stopped those messages.
Someone had hidden the truth.
"Your assistant told me you were unavailable," she said. "Your secretary said you didn't want any contact."
My hands curled into fists.
That didn't sound like me.
Not the man I believed I was.
But four years ago, I was different.
I was angry.
I was afraid.
I had just convinced myself that love was a weakness.
That children would destroy my freedom.
That building an empire mattered more than building a family.
"I thought you didn't care," Sophia whispered.
The words destroyed me.
Because I knew exactly what she believed.
And I couldn't even blame her.
I had left her.
I had walked away.
I had chosen a life without responsibilities.
But I never chose a life without my children.
"I would have come," I said.
My voice broke.
"I swear I would have."
Sophia looked at me.
"Would you?"
That single question silenced me.
Because I didn't know.
Four years ago...
Maybe I wouldn't have.
Maybe I would have run.
Maybe I would have convinced myself that she was trying to trap me.
Maybe I would have done exactly what she believed I did.
Sophia lowered her gaze.
"When they were born, they were so small."
Her voice softened.
"Emma couldn't sleep unless she held my finger. Noah cried every night until someone sang to him. And Liam..."
She smiled sadly.
"Liam looked at every man who came near him and wondered if that person would leave."
My heart shattered.
Because Liam was the boy who had just hugged another man and called him Daddy.
The boy who had learned to trust someone else.
Because I wasn't there.
"I didn't plan to fall in love with Daniel," Sophia said.
Daniel looked down.
"But he stayed."
She looked at me.
"When everyone else left... he stayed."
I had no answer.
Because she was right.
I had left.
Daniel stayed.
Then suddenly, a small voice interrupted the silence.
"Mommy?"
We all turned.
The little girl stood in the doorway, holding a stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes moved between me and Sophia.
"Is he the man from the picture?"
My breath stopped.
Sophia froze.
"What picture?"
The little girl pointed at me.
"The picture you keep in the drawer."
My heart pounded.
"What picture?"
Sophia's face changed.
For the first time since I arrived...
She looked afraid.
And I knew there was something else she had never told me.
Something hidden for four years.
Something that could change everything.
The little girl hugged her rabbit tighter.
Then she whispered:
"Mommy said my real daddy would come back one day."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And for the first time in four years...
Sophia Bennett looked like she wasn't sure whether she wanted me to stay...
Or disappear forever.
