PART 2 – THE CHAIRWOMAN ARRIVES
The ballroom shimmered beneath thousands of crystal lights.
Every major business publication in the country had sent reporters.
Luxury brands sponsored the evening.
Government officials mingled with technology founders, banking executives, and old-money philanthropists whose families had controlled fortunes for generations.
But no one was discussing the charity auction.
Everyone was waiting for one person.
The mysterious chairwoman of Fairchild Capital.
Almost no one had seen her face.
She never gave interviews.
She never attended social events unless absolutely necessary.
Yet every company in the room wanted her investment.
Including Winslow Developments.
Blake adjusted his tuxedo for the tenth time.
"Has anyone confirmed whether she's coming?" he asked one of the organizers.
"They received confirmation an hour ago."
Blake smiled confidently.
"This could change everything."
Beside him, Sloane squeezed his arm.
"You've worked so hard for this opportunity."
Lenette nodded proudly.
"My son belongs among billionaires."
Corinne was already livestreaming snippets of the ballroom.
"Imagine if Blake gets photographed with the chairwoman tonight."
"Tomorrow every business magazine will have his picture."
Blake's smile widened.
Exactly what he wanted.
He had spent months preparing a proposal for Fairchild Capital.
If they invested, Winslow Developments would expand nationwide.
If they declined...
The company's hidden debts would become impossible to manage.
No one knew that.
Except Blake.
And the banks.
Across the ballroom, several investors quietly whispered.
"Have you ever met Ms. Fairchild?"
"No."
"I've only heard she's incredibly private."
"They say she rebuilt the company after her father's death before turning thirty."
"They say she can recognize a dishonest executive within five minutes."
"I heard she once withdrew a billion-dollar investment because a CEO insulted a waitress."
The rumors only increased the tension.
Blake straightened his jacket again.
"I'll make an excellent first impression."
Sloane smiled.
"Of course you will."
Neither of them noticed an older gentleman watching from across the room.
Edward Harrington.
Chairman of the charity board.
He looked at Blake with quiet curiosity.
Then he glanced toward the entrance.
As if waiting for someone else.
Suddenly...
The orchestra stopped playing.
Every conversation faded.
The master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
"It is my great honor to welcome tonight's principal benefactor..."
"...the Chairwoman of Fairchild Capital."
The enormous doors slowly opened.
Outside...
A midnight-black Rolls-Royce Phantom came to a smooth stop beneath the grand staircase.
Not a limousine.
Not a rented luxury car.
A vehicle reserved exclusively for Fairchild executives.
Four security professionals exited first.
Then two female assistants.
Finally...
The driver opened the rear door.
A silver heel appeared.
Then another.
The woman stepped into the light wearing an elegant ivory couture gown embroidered with delicate pearls that reflected the chandeliers like moonlight.
A single sapphire necklace rested gracefully against her collarbone.
No excessive jewelry.
No dramatic makeup.
Only quiet confidence.
The room fell completely silent.
Blake frowned.
His heartbeat suddenly quickened.
Something about her posture felt...
...familiar.
The woman climbed the staircase without rushing.
Every investor instinctively moved aside.
Every photographer raised a camera.
Flash after flash illuminated the entrance.
Then she lifted her eyes.
Blake's face turned white.
"No..."
Sloane stared in disbelief.
"That's impossible..."
Lenette dropped her champagne glass.
Crystal shattered across the marble floor.
Corinne lowered her phone so quickly she almost dropped it.
Standing before three hundred of the country's most influential guests...
Was Arden.
Not wearing one of her simple dresses.
Not looking exhausted from cleaning their house.
Not looking invisible.
She looked like someone born to command boardrooms.
The room buzzed with confusion.
"Who is she?"
"Wait..."
"Isn't that Blake Winslow's wife?"
"I thought she stayed home."
"I've seen her before..."
Edward Harrington smiled warmly as he walked directly toward Arden.
Then...
To everyone's astonishment...
The seventy-two-year-old chairman bowed his head respectfully.
"Welcome, Chairwoman Fairchild."
"It is an honor to have you with us."
Every executive froze.
Chairwoman...
Fairchild?
Blake's mouth slowly opened.
His mind refused to connect the words.
Arden met Edward's smile.
"Thank you for protecting my identity all these years."
"It was your request," Edward replied.
"But I suspected tonight would be... memorable."
A ripple of uneasy laughter spread through nearby guests.
One by one, CEOs approached Arden.
Not casually.
Respectfully.
Almost nervously.
A banking president shook her hand.
"Thank you for approving our renewable energy partnership."
Another executive smiled.
"Congratulations on last quarter's record performance."
A governor greeted her personally.
"It is wonderful to finally meet you."
Each greeting struck Blake like another blow.
None of these people acknowledged him anymore.
Their attention belonged entirely to Arden.
He stumbled forward.
"Arden..."
She turned calmly.
Her expression revealed nothing.
He forced an awkward smile.
"You never told me..."
"You never asked," she replied.
Silence.
"I... think there's been some misunderstanding."
Arden tilted her head.
"Has there?"
Blake lowered his voice.
"Can we talk privately?"
Before she could answer...
One of Fairchild Capital's senior legal advisers stepped beside her.
"Madam Chairwoman."
"The board is ready."
"The acquisition documents only require your final authorization."
Blake frowned.
"Acquisition?"
The lawyer glanced politely toward him.
"Yes."
"The acquisition of Winslow Developments."
Blake laughed nervously.
"I'm sorry..."
"I think you've confused us with another company."
The lawyer looked surprised.
"No, Mr. Winslow."
"There is no mistake."
He handed Arden a leather portfolio.
"The purchase agreement was completed months ago."
"Fairchild Capital has quietly acquired ninety-three percent of Winslow Developments through legal share purchases."
Blake's smile disappeared.
"Ninety-three..."
"That's impossible."
"I own this company."
The lawyer calmly opened the file.
"You owned seven percent."
"The remaining shares belonged to outside investors."
"They accepted Chairwoman Fairchild's offer."
Blake felt the blood drain from his face.
His hands began to shake.
Around them, whispers spread through the ballroom.
Sloane stepped backward.
Lenette looked as though she might faint.
Corinne hurriedly ended her livestream before anyone could hear another word.
Arden accepted the portfolio without looking away from Blake.
Then she spoke quietly enough for only his family to hear.
"You told me tonight that everything I had existed because of you."
She closed the folder with a soft click.
"In about ten minutes..."
"You'll learn whose name has always been on everything."
