PART 7 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE FAMILY ESTATE
The gunshot echoed through the underground passage.
I stopped breathing.
For one terrible second, I thought my mother was dead.
“Mom!”
No answer.
I turned around.
The narrow passage was dark, damp, and barely wide enough for one person.
Behind me, I could hear footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
Then a man's voice echoed through the tunnel.
“Samantha…”
My grandfather.
“You've spent your entire life believing lies.”
I kept moving.
“Come back upstairs.”
I didn't answer.
“You deserve to know the truth.”
I reached the end of the passage and found a metal door.
Locked.
My heart pounded.
I searched the wall.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the letter.
The ring.
I pulled my father's signet ring from my pocket.
There was a tiny symbol engraved inside.
A triangle surrounded by three dots.
I pressed it against the lock.
Click.
The door opened.
I stepped inside.
And froze.
The room was enormous.
Shelves covered every wall.
Boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank statements.
Newspapers.
It looked like someone had spent decades collecting evidence.
Then I saw the name written across the largest box.
PRESCOTT FAMILY ARCHIVE — CONFIDENTIAL
I opened it.
Inside were photographs of my father.
My mother.
Damian.
Chloe.
And a man I had never seen before.
Except I had.
His face was familiar.
I recognized him from old family photographs.
My grandfather's closest friend.
Victor Carlisle.
Damian's father.
I felt sick.
Two families.
One secret.
One conspiracy.
And my entire life had been built on top of it.
* * *
My phone vibrated.
Paige.
I answered immediately.
“Sam! Where are you?”
“At my father's estate.”
“What happened?”
“I found an underground archive.”
Silence.
“An archive?”
“Yes.”
“Get out.”
“Why?”
“Because I just accessed the corporate records.”
“And?”
“Damian has been moving money for years.”
“I know.”
“No, you don't.”
Her voice trembled.
“He hasn't been moving it into Chloe's company.”
I froze.
“Then where?”
“Into an account called Prescott Legacy Trust.”
My blood ran cold.
“That belongs to my family.”
“Exactly.”
“Who controls it?”
Paige hesitated.
Then she said:
“Your grandfather.”
I stared at the documents in front of me.
It was all connected.
The money.
The house.
My father's death.
Damian.
My grandfather.
But one question remained.
Why me?
* * *
I searched through the archive until I found a file dated twenty-three years ago.
The day my mother supposedly died.
Inside was a police report.
Then a medical record.
Then a photograph.
My mother wasn't in a car accident.
She had disappeared.
Her death certificate had been forged.
The person who signed it?
A doctor named Elliot Grant.
I knew that name.
He had been one of the doctors who treated me before my artery ruptured.
I sat down.
The same doctor who had access to my medical records…
had forged my mother's death certificate twenty-three years earlier.
And his name appeared on several payments from Damian.
I suddenly understood.
My illness hadn't happened naturally.
Someone had been monitoring my health for years.
Waiting.
Watching.
Preparing.
My phone rang again.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice spoke.
“Did you find the archive?”
I recognized him.
Michael Reed.
“Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“Who shot my mother?”
Silence.
Then:
“Your grandfather.”
I closed my eyes.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
Relief washed over me.
“Where?”
“Not where you think.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your mother knew your grandfather would come after her.”
“So she escaped?”
“She was never his target.”
“What?”
Michael's voice became serious.
“Your grandfather wanted you.”
My blood went cold.
“Why?”
“Because you're the legal heir.”
“To what?”
“Everything.”
* * *
A floorboard creaked behind me.
I turned.
Nobody.
Then the lights suddenly came on.
A projector in the corner activated.
My father's face appeared on the wall.
It was a video recording.
He looked older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Samantha,” he said.
I covered my mouth.
“If you're watching this, then the people I feared have finally come for you.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“I need you to understand something.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“Your inheritance isn't money.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Money can be stolen.”
He paused.
“Your inheritance is control.”
A document appeared beside him.
“The Prescott family owns controlling interests in several companies, properties, trusts, and financial institutions.”
I stared at the screen.
“That is why they want you dead.”
My father's voice became softer.
“Damian was never interested in your love.”
My heart broke despite everything.
“He was interested in your signature.”
The video changed.
A younger Damian appeared.
Standing beside Victor Carlisle.
My father's voice continued.
“They created a plan to marry you.”
I stared at the screen.
“Once you signed certain agreements, they would gain control of everything.”
Another image appeared.
My wedding.
My signature.
Damian smiling.
I felt sick.
But then my father's expression changed.
“There is one thing they don't know.”
The screen went black.
A final message appeared.
THE TRUE HEIR IS NOT SAMANTHA.
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
The screen flickered.
Then another photograph appeared.
A baby.
A newborn girl.
Beside her stood my father.
And a woman I didn't recognize.
Underneath the photograph was a name.
CHLOE PRESCOTT.
My heart stopped.
Chloe wasn't my father's daughter.
She was his firstborn heir.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
The money.
The revenge.
The marriage.
The forged documents.
But there was one problem.
If Chloe was the true heir…
Why had my father left everything to me?
The answer appeared on the screen.
One final sentence.
“Because Chloe died the night she was born.”
I stared at the photograph.
My hands trembled.
Then I heard a voice behind me.
“That's not true.”
I turned.
My grandfather stood in the doorway.
Blood stained his shirt.
But he was smiling.
He held a gun in one hand.
And beside him…
Was my mother.
Alive.
Bound.
My grandfather looked at me.
“You've finally discovered the first lie.”
He raised the gun.
“Now I'll tell you the second.”
He pointed toward Chloe's photograph.
“Chloe didn't die.”
My heart stopped.
“She was stolen.”
He smiled.
“And the woman you call Chloe Danvers…”
He paused.
“…isn't Chloe at all.”
I stared at him in horror.
“Then who is she?”
My grandfather's smile disappeared.
“She is the daughter of the man who murdered your father.”
And before I could ask another question…
The lights went out.
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
Then someone screamed.
