PART 5 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Catherine stared at the photograph.
Her fingers went numb.
She zoomed in.
There was Mark standing outside a law office.
Beside him was Teresa.
But behind them, partially hidden by the glass door, stood someone else.
Someone Catherine knew.
Someone she trusted.
Her attorney.
For several seconds, Catherine couldn't breathe.
“No…”
She zoomed in again.
There was no mistake.
It was him.
The same man who had represented Catherine during the purchase of her house years ago.
The same man she had just contacted.
The same man she had trusted enough to send every piece of evidence to.
Catherine immediately closed the message.
Then she stared at her phone.
Her attorney had told her not to go home.
He had told her not to contact Mark.
He had told her to bring him every document in the morning.
But now she wondered why.
Had he been protecting her?
Or had he been buying time?
Catherine opened the photograph again.
This time, she noticed something in Mark's hand.
A folder.
She enhanced the image.
There was a logo on the corner.
It belonged to a company Catherine recognized.
Her own company.
Her heart began pounding.
She opened her business banking application.
A notification appeared.
Recent authorization request: Transfer of corporate assets.
Catherine immediately called her business manager.
A tired voice answered.
“Catherine?”
“Did Mark contact you?”
There was a pause.
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“He said you had authorized him to restructure the company.”
Catherine closed her eyes.
“I never authorized that.”
“I was afraid of that.”
“What did you do?”
“I didn't approve anything. I told him I needed written confirmation from you.”
Catherine exhaled.
“Thank you.”
After ending the call, she opened her company's records.
There it was.
A series of documents had been prepared.
They were attempting to move ownership of several valuable assets into another company.
And the name of that company was unfamiliar.
Catherine searched it.
Her blood ran cold.
The company was registered only eight months earlier.
Its listed director was...
Paula Whitmore.
Catherine leaned back in her chair.
Everything suddenly connected.
The stolen money.
The secret transfers.
The property documents.
The strange withdrawals.
The fake authorization requests.
They weren't simply trying to steal her house.
They were building an entire financial network around her.
A network designed to make her assets disappear before she even realized what was happening.
Catherine looked at Chloe.
Her daughter was still asleep.
She lowered her voice.
“You're not taking anything from us.”
Then her phone vibrated.
Another message.
This time, from her attorney.
“Please come to my office at 8:00 a.m. We need to discuss this privately.”
Catherine stared at the message.
She didn't reply.
Instead, she opened the photograph again.
There was one detail she hadn't noticed.
The date printed on the security camera image.
Tomorrow.
Catherine froze.
The photograph wasn't old.
It had been taken only hours ago.
Someone had sent it to her deliberately.
Someone wanted her to know.
Someone wanted her to understand that her attorney was meeting Mark and Teresa even while telling Catherine to trust him.
Then another message arrived from the unknown number.
“Don't go to his office.”
Catherine typed:
“Who are you?”
The response came almost immediately.
“Someone who knows what they did to your father.”
Catherine's entire body went still.
Her father had been dead for nine years.
And as far as Catherine knew, his death had nothing to do with Mark, Teresa, or Paula.
But the next message changed everything.
“Your father didn't die broke.”
Catherine stared at the words.
Then another photograph appeared.
It showed her father standing beside a bank manager.
Behind them was a safe deposit box.
A box Catherine had never known existed.
Her hands began to shake.
She looked at Chloe.
Then back at the photograph.
For nine years, Catherine had believed she knew everything about her father's final days.
Now someone was telling her that the story she had been given was a lie.
And if that was true...
Then the people trying to steal her future might also be connected to a secret buried in her family's past.
Catherine carefully saved the photograph.
Then she whispered:
“Who are you?”
The unknown number replied one final time.
“Ask your mother what happened nine years ago.”
Catherine's blood ran cold.
Because her mother had died eight years ago.
And there was only one person left who could possibly know the truth.
Teresa.
The woman sitting at Catherine's dinner table that night.
The woman who had just spent Catherine's money.
And perhaps...
The woman who had known the truth all along.
