PART 7
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Daniel's words echoed through the room.
“He said if we want Hazel to stay safe, we have to stop looking for the truth.”
I looked toward the window.
Outside, the street was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Did he say anything else?” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“He only said one thing before hanging up.”
“What?”
“He said, ‘You should have stayed dead.’”
A cold wave ran through my body.
Daniel locked the front door.
Then he checked the windows.
I had never seen fear on his face before.
Now I understood why.
“Daniel, we need to call the police.”
“I already tried.”
“What?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
He showed me his phone.
There were three missed calls from an unknown number.
“Someone called the police station pretending to be you,” he said.
“What did they say?”
“That you were having a mental breakdown. That you had kidnapped your daughter and were threatening your family.”
I stared at him.
“They're building a story against me.”
Daniel nodded.
“And they're doing it before we can expose them.”
My stomach tightened.
This wasn't just about money anymore.
My parents were trying to make me look dangerous.
If something happened to me or Hazel, everyone would believe their version.
I grabbed my phone.
“We need evidence somewhere they can't reach.”
Daniel looked at me.
“I know a place.”
* * *
An hour later, we drove to a small law office in downtown Orlando.
Margaret was already waiting.
When she saw Daniel walk through the door, she froze.
For years, she had believed he was somewhere alive but hidden.
Seeing him standing beside me was different.
“You found him,” she whispered.
“No,” Daniel replied.
“He found us.”
Margaret's face became serious.
She locked the office door.
“Then we don't have much time.”
I placed all the documents on her desk.
The trust agreement.
The bank records.
The old medical records.
The photographs.
Everything.
Margaret examined each document carefully.
Then she opened the original trust agreement.
Her expression changed.
“What?” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Your grandmother wasn't only protecting you.”
“Then who?”
“Both of you.”
She turned the document around.
There was a clause I had never seen.
If either child is removed from the family through deception, coercion, or unlawful guardianship, all assets will be transferred immediately into an independent trust controlled by the court.
I stared at the words.
“So they couldn't inherit anything.”
“Correct.”
Margaret continued reading.
“But there is another condition.”
“What?”
“The trust cannot be activated until both children are reunited.”
I looked at Daniel.
He understood immediately.
“They separated us on purpose.”
“Yes,” Margaret said.
“They needed to keep you apart.”
I felt sick.
“All those years…”
“They weren't protecting the family,” Margaret said.
“They were protecting the money.”
* * *
Then Daniel pulled another document from his jacket.
“I found this yesterday.”
Margaret read it.
Her face went pale.
“What is it?”
She looked at me.
“A transfer authorization.”
“From whom?”
“Your father.”
“For what?”
Margaret placed the document on the table.
“The trust assets.”
I stared at the amount.
My hands went cold.
$4.8 million.
“That money was transferred last month.”
“To where?”
Margaret pointed at the account number.
“A private corporation.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Do you recognize the name?”
He shook his head.
Margaret typed something into her computer.
A few seconds later, she stopped.
“I know who owns it.”
“Who?”
She turned the screen toward us.
The company belonged to Eleanor Carter.
My mother.
I felt something inside me break.
“They stole the money.”
“Not exactly,” Margaret said.
She enlarged the records.
“The money was transferred from the trust into this corporation.”
“Then where did it go?”
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
“Someone transferred it again.”
“To another account.”
“Whose?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Yours.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Emily, according to these records, the money was transferred into a bank account under your name.”
My heart stopped.
“I don't have that account.”
“I know.”
Daniel stood up.
“They're framing her.”
Margaret nodded.
“Exactly.”
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The online accusations.
The police call.
The threats.
They weren't simply trying to take the inheritance.
They were creating a financial crime and putting my name on it.
Then they would make me look like a thief.
And if I tried to defend myself, they would reveal the fake account.
I whispered:
“They want me arrested.”
Margaret didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
* * *
At that moment, someone knocked on the office door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Margaret whispered:
“Did anyone follow you?”
I shook my head.
Daniel moved toward the window.
The knocking came again.
Then a man's voice sounded from the hallway.
“Emily Carter?”
My blood turned cold.
A second voice followed.
“Police.”
Daniel looked at me.
“We didn't call them.”
Margaret immediately reached for her phone.
“Stay here.”
The door handle moved.
“Open the door!”
I grabbed Hazel's hand.
She had been sitting quietly in the corner with her coloring book.
“Mommy?”
I pulled her close.
“It's okay.”
But I knew it wasn't.
The door opened.
Two officers entered.
One of them held a photograph.
He looked directly at me.
“Emily Carter?”
“Yes.”
He raised the photograph.
“We have a warrant for your arrest.”
My daughter started crying.
“Mommy!”
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the officers in shock.
Then one officer said the words that made my entire body go numb.
“You are being arrested for the theft of 4.8 million dollars from the Carter Family Trust.”
I couldn't breathe.
I hadn't stolen anything.
But before I could say another word, Margaret stepped between us.
“Officer, before you arrest her…”
She held up the original trust agreement.
“…you might want to know who actually owns that money.”
The officer looked at the document.
Then his expression changed.
Because his partner had just received a message on his radio.
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
And finally said:
“There's been another development.”
He lowered the radio.
“The man who reported the theft…”
He paused.
“…has just been found unconscious inside the Carter family house.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
The officer looked at me.
“Your father.”
