PART 7: MARCUS NO LONGER TRUSTED ME
For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.
Marcus didn't trust me.
The words kept repeating in my mind.
After fourteen years of marriage.
After everything we had survived together.
After I had sat beside his coffin while his own brother accused me of destroying him.
After I had spent six days believing my husband was dead…
He believed I had betrayed him.
I looked at Dr. Jonathan Reed.
“You're lying.”
He shook his head.
“I'm not.”
“Marcus would never believe that.”
“He did.”
“Why?”
Jonathan looked toward Emily.
“Because someone convinced him.”
Emily's face changed.
“Who?”
Jonathan answered quietly:
“Someone who had access to Claire's phone.”
My heart stopped.
“My phone?”
“Yes.”
Detective Carter stepped forward.
“Explain.”
Jonathan looked around the parking garage.
“Not here.”
Carter pointed his weapon toward him.
“You're going to explain everything right now.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Fine.”
He pulled out another photograph.
This one showed a computer screen.
On the screen was an email account.
My email account.
And beside it was a message sent to Marcus.
I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. IF YOU DON'T STOP, CLAIRE WILL PAY FOR IT.
I stared at the screen.
“I never sent that.”
“I know.”
“Then who did?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“Someone cloned your phone.”
Emily suddenly whispered:
“Richard.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.”
Emily looked confused.
“Then who?”
Jonathan's eyes moved toward Lily.
“The person who had physical access to Claire's phone every day.”
My heart sank.
I thought about everyone who had entered our house.
The housekeeper.
My mother.
Patricia.
Emily.
Marcus's employees.
Then one name came to me.
Someone who had been with us constantly.
Someone I had never questioned.
I whispered:
“Lily's nanny.”
Emily's face changed.
Jonathan nodded.
“Her name is Sarah.”
I felt sick.
Sarah had worked for our family for almost five years.
She had taken Lily to school.
Helped her with homework.
Stayed with her when Marcus and I traveled.
She knew our schedules.
Our passwords.
Our habits.
Everything.
“Where is she?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“Gone.”
“When?”
“The day Marcus disappeared.”
Detective Carter immediately pulled out his phone.
“I'll have her located.”
But Emily interrupted.
“It's too late.”
Carter looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“She wasn't working alone.”
I stared at Emily.
“Who else?”
Emily took a deep breath.
“Your mother.”
I closed my eyes.
“No.”
“Claire—”
“No.”
My mother had always been difficult.
Controlling.
Sometimes cruel.
But she was still my mother.
She had held me when I was a child.
She had helped me after Lily was born.
She had cried beside me at Marcus's funeral.
How could she be part of this?
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Your mother wasn't the mastermind.”
“Then what did she do?”
“She gave them information.”
“What information?”
“Your husband's travel plans.”
My stomach turned.
“Why?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“Because they threatened her.”
“With what?”
He hesitated.
“Your father's death.”
I froze.
“My father?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Your father didn't die of natural causes.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He was investigating the same organization Marcus later discovered.”
My knees weakened.
My father had died when I was nineteen.
Everyone had said it was a heart attack.
But Jonathan was telling me it wasn't.
“Why would my mother never tell me?”
“Because she was threatened into silence.”
I looked at Emily.
“Did Marcus know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he was trying to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
My voice cracked.
“Everyone says they're protecting me, but all they've done is lie.”
Emily stepped closer.
“I know.”
I looked at her.
“Then tell me the truth.”
She hesitated.
“All of it.”
She nodded.
“Marcus discovered the organization two years ago.”
“What organization?”
“A private network of businessmen, politicians, bankers, and lawyers.”
David's voice suddenly came from behind us.
“That's impossible.”
I turned.
He had followed us into the garage.
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You've seen the documents.”
David's face went pale.
“I saw transactions.”
“You saw the surface.”
Emily continued.
“The real operation is called The Meridian Circle.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But Detective Carter reacted immediately.
“Meridian Circle?”
Emily nodded.
“You've heard of it?”
Carter's expression hardened.
“Only as a rumor.”
Jonathan said:
“It's not a rumor.”
Emily looked at me.
“Marcus spent eighteen months trying to expose them.”
“And Richard?”
“Richard worked for them.”
“My mother?”
“Was forced to cooperate.”
“Sarah?”
“One of their informants.”
I swallowed.
“And you?”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I was sent to spy on Marcus.”
Silence.
“But then I fell in love with the people he was trying to protect.”
I stared at her.
“Me and Lily?”
She nodded.
“And Marcus.”
I didn't know what to say.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
COME ALONE.
Underneath it was an address.
My heart began pounding.
Then another message appeared.
BRING THE RED KEY.
I showed Detective Carter.
“No.”
He immediately shook his head.
“You're not going anywhere alone.”
“But they have Marcus.”
“We don't know that.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“I do.”
He pointed toward the photograph.
“That's the hospital where Marcus has been hiding.”
“Then take us there.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“If we go with police, they'll move him.”
Carter stared at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because I helped create the safe room.”
The detective's expression changed.
“Where?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“Under an abandoned clinic.”
I felt my heart race.
“Take me there.”
Carter shook his head.
“Absolutely not.”
“My husband is alive.”
“And your daughter is a target.”
I looked at Lily.
Then at the message.
Another text appeared.
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.
I showed it to Carter.
He swore under his breath.
“We're going.”
Emily nodded.
“I'll come too.”
Carter looked at her.
“You stay behind me.”
She nodded.
We rushed toward the vehicles.
But before I got inside, Lily grabbed my hand.
“Mom.”
I knelt beside her.
“What is it?”
She whispered:
“Dad told me something else.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“He said if you ever found the red key…”
She looked around nervously.
“…you should never give it to anyone.”
I stared at the key.
Then at the message.
BRING THE RED KEY.
Someone knew Lily had it.
Someone knew Marcus had given it to her.
And suddenly I realized the truth.
The person sending the messages wasn't guessing.
They had been listening.
I looked toward the parking garage cameras.
Someone was watching us right now.
I whispered:
“Carter…”
He turned.
“We're not alone.”
His eyes followed mine.
One of the security cameras slowly moved.
It was pointed directly at Lily.
Carter raised his weapon.
“Everyone down!”
A gunshot exploded through the garage.
The windshield of Jonathan's SUV shattered.
Lily screamed.
I threw myself over her.
Another shot rang out.
Then silence.
Carter looked toward the upper level.
“Sniper!”
The officers rushed for cover.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Claire!”
“What?”
“We have to leave now.”
“Why?”
She pointed toward the exit.
A black van was approaching.
Emily's face turned white.
“They're not here to kill us.”
“Then what?”
“They're here for Lily.”
I looked at my daughter.
And for the first time, I understood what Marcus had been fighting for.
Not his company.
Not his money.
Not even his life.
He had been fighting to keep our daughter alive.
The van stopped.
The doors opened.
Three masked men jumped out.
One of them shouted:
“Take the girl!”
I pulled Lily against me.
“No!”
And then a voice echoed from the darkness behind us.
A voice I had dreamed of hearing for six terrible days.
“Touch my daughter…”
Everyone froze.
I turned.
A man stepped out from behind the concrete pillars.
He was thinner.
Paler.
His face was bruised.
But I knew him instantly.
My husband.
Marcus.
Alive.
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And his eyes filled with tears.
“Claire…”
I couldn't move.
He took one step toward us.
Then stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
His voice broke.
“I never meant to make you believe I was dead.”
I started crying.
“Marcus…”
He looked at me.
But there was something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Fear.
And distrust.
Then he whispered:
“Claire, don't come any closer.”
My heart shattered.
“Why?”
Marcus looked past me.
Toward Emily.
“Because one of you is working for them.”
Emily's face went white.
Marcus raised his eyes to mine.
“And I still don't know which one.”
