PART 5 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW MY REAL NAME
The warehouse was silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
It was the kind that comes immediately after a gunshot.
The kind that makes every breath feel dangerous.
I stared at the two women standing opposite each other.
Victoria Blackwood held a gun in her right hand.
Elena Morgan held one in hers.
Both were looking at me.
Both claimed to know the truth.
And both had spent years lying to me.
Victoria smiled.
“You really don't remember, do you?”
My throat tightened.
“Remember what?”
She took one step forward.
“Your childhood.”
I shook my head.
“I remember my childhood.”
“No.”
Her voice became softer.
“You remember the childhood we gave you.”
Elena shouted:
“Don't listen to her!”
Victoria laughed.
“You still protect her?”
Elena's face hardened.
“I protected my daughter.”
“Your daughter?”
Victoria raised an eyebrow.
“You mean the child you stole?”
I looked at Elena.
“Stole?”
She didn't answer.
That frightened me more than anything Victoria had said.
I turned toward her.
“Tell me the truth.”
Elena lowered her weapon slightly.
“Claire…”
“Don't call me Claire.”
She froze.
“If I'm Amelia, then call me Amelia.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“You're my daughter.”
“Which name?”
She closed her eyes.
“Amelia.”
My heart broke.
“Then why did you let me live as Claire?”
“Because it was the only way to keep you alive.”
Victoria interrupted.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“It was the only way to keep you from discovering what she did.”
Elena raised her gun again.
“Victoria, stop.”
“Why?”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“Because the truth will destroy all of us.”
A sudden metallic sound came from behind me.
Adrian.
His handcuffs were still on, but he had somehow freed one wrist.
He looked at me.
“Claire.”
I turned.
“Don't call me that.”
His face tightened.
“Amelia.”
That hurt even more.
He knew.
He had known.
My entire life had been a lie.
And the man I had loved for six years was my biological brother.
I stepped backward.
“Stay away from me.”
“I'm trying to protect you.”
“You married another woman.”
“I know.”
“You used my identity.”
“I didn't.”
“Then explain the marriage certificate.”
Adrian looked toward Victoria.
“She did it.”
Victoria smiled.
“Of course she did.”
Adrian continued.
“She used your identity to create a legal marriage between herself and me.”
“Why?”
“Because she needed access to your trust.”
I looked at Victoria.
“You wanted my inheritance.”
Victoria didn't deny it.
“I wanted what belonged to my family.”
“Two hundred million dollars?”
“That money was stolen from the Blackwoods.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You stole it from me first.”
Victoria's expression changed.
“No.”
She looked at Elena.
“She did.”
I turned.
“Elena?”
My mother's face crumpled.
“I never wanted the money.”
“Then why did you create the trust?”
“Because your father left instructions.”
“Which father?”
She went silent.
Victoria answered for her.
“Jonathan Blackwood.”
I looked at Adrian.
He nodded slowly.
“My father.”
Victoria continued.
“Your biological father was killed eight years ago.”
“But Harris said the man buried at the funeral was Adrian's father.”
“That was a lie.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because if people believed Jonathan Blackwood was dead, nobody would look for him.”
I frowned.
“Look for him?”
Victoria's eyes darkened.
“Because he wasn't dead.”
A chill ran through me.
“Where is he?”
Victoria smiled.
“You're standing in front of him.”
I turned toward the warehouse entrance.
A man stepped out of the darkness.
My heart stopped.
He was older.
Gray hair.
A scar across his cheek.
But I knew that face.
I had seen it in hundreds of photographs.
The man standing before me was supposed to be dead.
Jonathan Blackwood.
Adrian's father.
My father.
He looked at me.
“Amelia.”
I couldn't speak.
He walked toward me slowly.
“I'm sorry.”
I stared at him.
“For what?”
“For everything.”
“You watched me grow up believing another man was my father.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me fall in love with Adrian.”
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
“You let him almost marry me.”
He closed his eyes.
“I didn't know who you were at first.”
I laughed.
“You didn't know your own daughter?”
“When you were a baby, Victoria took you.”
Victoria immediately shouted:
“That's a lie!”
Jonathan turned toward her.
“You know it's true.”
Victoria's expression hardened.
“You abandoned us.”
“I was trying to save Amelia.”
“You destroyed this family!”
“I exposed what you were doing.”
“What I was doing?”
Victoria laughed.
“You killed him.”
Jonathan froze.
I looked between them.
“Who?”
Victoria pointed at Jonathan.
“He killed your real father.”
My blood ran cold.
Jonathan's face changed.
“Don't.”
Victoria continued.
“He killed the man who raised you.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Who was my father?”
Jonathan looked at me.
Then he said:
“Daniel Morgan.”
The name meant nothing.
But Elena reacted.
She covered her mouth.
Jonathan continued.
“Daniel was not your adoptive father.”
“He was your biological father.”
I stared at him.
“Then who are you?”
Jonathan answered quietly:
“My brother.”
The world seemed to tilt.
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Jonathan.
Then at Victoria.
“You're my uncle.”
Jonathan nodded.
“And Adrian?”
“My son.”
My stomach turned.
“So Adrian and I…”
“Are cousins.”
Silence.
I suddenly remembered the way Adrian and I had met.
Six years earlier.
At a charity gala.
He had stared at me for several seconds before asking:
“Have we met before?”
I had laughed.
He said it was impossible.
Now I knew why he had recognized something familiar.
Blood.
Family.
A history neither of us remembered.
I looked at Elena.
“Who is Amelia?”
She began crying.
“You are.”
“Then who was the girl who died?”
Elena looked at Victoria.
Victoria answered.
“Your sister.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Claire.”
“Yes.”
The name I'd carried all my life.
The identity I'd thought belonged to me.
The identity of the sister who died.
I whispered:
“She was real.”
“Yes.”
“And I took her identity.”
“You didn't.”
Elena shook her head.
“We gave it to you.”
“Why?”
“Because Amelia was the child they wanted.”
I looked at Jonathan.
“Who wanted me?”
He didn't answer.
Victoria did.
“Everyone.”
She stepped closer.
“Because you inherited something your father hid.”
“What?”
“The Blackwood ledger.”
I frowned.
“What ledger?”
Victoria smiled.
“The one containing the names of every politician, banker, judge and businessman who took money from the Blackwood empire.”
I felt cold.
“That doesn't exist.”
Jonathan looked at me.
“It does.”
“Where?”
He pointed at my neck.
My hand immediately went to the silver butterfly necklace.
I stared at it.
“No.”
Jonathan nodded.
“The necklace contains a memory chip.”
I ripped it from my neck.
The tiny silver butterfly fell into my palm.
Adrian stared at it.
“My father spent years looking for that.”
I looked at Jonathan.
“Why didn't you take it?”
“Because I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because the chip only opens when it recognizes your biometric signature.”
I stared at him.
“My fingerprint.”
“Yes.”
“And you needed me alive.”
Jonathan nodded.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
“That was always the problem.”
She raised her gun.
“Amelia was the only person who could open it.”
Elena stepped between us.
“No.”
Victoria aimed at her.
“You stole her from me.”
“I saved her.”
“You destroyed my daughter.”
“I saved her from you!”
Victoria's finger tightened around the trigger.
Adrian shouted:
“Mom!”
The gun fired.
Elena collapsed.
I screamed.
“Mom!”
I ran toward her.
Blood spread across her white blouse.
I dropped beside her.
“Mom!”
She grabbed my hand.
Her eyes were fading.
“Amelia…”
“I'm here.”
She struggled to breathe.
“Your father…”
“Which one?”
She looked toward Jonathan.
Then whispered:
“Not him.”
My heart stopped.
She pulled me closer.
“The man who raised you…”
She coughed.
“He wasn't Daniel.”
I froze.
“Then who?”
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Adrian.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She shook her head weakly.
“Not Adrian.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“His father.”
I looked at Jonathan.
He had gone completely pale.
Elena whispered:
“Your real father is still alive.”
Then she looked directly at me.
“And he is standing…”
She stopped.
Her eyes widened.
Behind me, someone whispered:
“Amelia.”
I slowly turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
He looked at Jonathan.
Then at Victoria.
Then at me.
And said:
“It's time you knew who your father really is.”
Jonathan raised his gun.
“Don't.”
The stranger smiled.
“You've lied to her for twenty-eight years.”
Then he looked at me.
“And now she deserves the truth.”
He pulled out an old photograph.
I stared at it.
There were three men standing together.
Jonathan.
Daniel.
And the stranger.
But there was one detail that made my blood freeze.
On the back of the photograph was written:
THE THREE BROTHERS — BEFORE THEY KILLED THE FOURTH.
I looked up.
“There were four brothers?”
The stranger nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who was the fourth?”
He looked directly at Jonathan.
Then said:
“Your father.”
The warehouse erupted in chaos.
And before anyone could move, the lights went out again.
This time, someone locked the doors from the outside.
We were trapped.
And somewhere in the darkness, a child began crying.
